Everyone speeds in Michigan. You get a cap in your ass if you don't. The most commonly used street to get to my old high school is still limit 30 and it's still the norm to do 50+ on it. My own mother would do so with a van full of kids.

Good find, pretty dumb to take it to court and not just pay it. It's only $140 and more than likely you're just going to have to front the cash at the end regardless. There's no real defense for speeding, at best you can pray the officer just doesn't make a statement and maybe that'll get you out of it - but if he does you pretty much just have to pay. Its their word against yours and they're a cop with a radar gun record of you going over, there's pretty much nothing you can say against it. Now you're out however many hours it took you to show up to court and the money anyways.
That said if he was only going 6-10 over like the case claims that's some bullshit to get ticketed for. Unless he's in a school zone I guess. I'm going to imagine he might've been pulled over for something unrelated to the speeding (like expired tabs or something) and the cop let him off with a warning for that, then gave him a significantly smaller infraction for speeding just to teach him a lesson.

Going to the hearing for a minor traffic ticket is often worth the effort. It's a racket, so it's optimized for efficiency. Actually hearing cases is slow and expensive. Offering plea bargains is fast and cheap. They load up the courtroom with lots of contestants for each hearing and offer each one a plea bargain based on their driving record. It's almost always a smart move to take it -- you cop to a non-moving violation (like a busted tail light), don't eat any points, and just have to pay a fine.
The hearing runs like an assembly line -- "calling Big McLargeHuge ... here's the plea bargain you haggled, how do you plead? Guilty plea accepted, sentence as recommended, naughty naughty, behave yourself, pay fine, go away, next!"
You only ever plead "not guilty" in traffic court if you can genuinely prove your innocence or you're a Tier 3 idiot*. There are two ways to really piss off a traffic court judge: waste his time trying to bullshit your way out of a ticket when you're guilty as sin, and waste his time with a flimsy case the defendant can actually beat. The former results in a guilty verdict, a stiff fine and lots of points. The latter results in dismissal and earns the prosecutor's boss an angry phone call later that day. It's not just the revenue that's lost; it's embarrassing to have a gallery full of contestants witness one of their own actually win the rigged game.
* Chibi is absolutely an idiot, but he's also greedy and selfish so even if he goes to court with every intention of charming his way out of it, they'll dangle a plea bargain in front of him and he'll take it because it's easier, faster and a sure thing once it's offered unless he does something insane like piss on the podium when he's called up by the judge.
ETA: You can usually also just pay the ticket in person with no penalty at the courthouse on the day of the hearing too if you get there and decide to skip the carnival after all anyway.

Not a lawyer, but does "DENIED RESPONSIBILITY" here mean that Adam plead not guilty/refused to pay the fine?
If that's not the case, I know that sometimes you can get sent to court for speeding even for low speeds if there were some location-specific things at play, as someone mentioned above concerning school zones and etc., though I am not familiar with how Michigan law works or whether or not there would be something written in this list of events that would signify something of that nature.

Nah the more likely outcome, the one he’ll have to come out of Twitter retirement to share, is that the judge comments on his hair, to which the protagonist replies “at least I have hair, Judge Faggot”. The judge laughs for an uninterrupted five minutes while the entire court room stands up and cheers. Naturally the state drops the fine and offers to take points off of his license.
