Star Trek - Space: The Final Frontier

Because Stewart is dying and the purpose of modern Trek is to be a therapy to the people making it. Story, characters, common sense be damned.
Apart of me honestly wishes Stewart had died sometime in the last decade. Like around 2015 or something. They would have still made Discovery but TNG and really nineties trek would not have its legacy raped by this abomination.

It would have been a better outcome I think. It does seem that a lot of the writing on modern trek is basically extended therapy fanfic in the vein you might see on Tumblr or AO3. Designed to help neurotic women process their particular mental disorders basically.

This show is so so so bad but I honestly think it's mostly the writing killing it outside of Stewart's acting which borders on elder abuse. It's so decrepit and frail without any sign of those things being deliberate choices that it's like watching a slightly more with-it Biden stumble around. Hurd I don't love either but can chalk it up to the writing. Not-Guinan is just painful and she feels like always one step away from lecturing a cowed Picard about BLM.

If they had just tried to write some adventures of this wacky crew traveling around the universe getting into trouble I want to believe we'd have more creativity from the writing team but instead we get this absolute star dreck that even the sweatiest of fan-fiction writers would be embarrassed to hit publish on their blog.

I agree Stewart does sound frail and weak. Especially when I see guys like Lee Majors who are around the same age as him who even when acting in a corny budget movie still gives a better performance. But I agree it kills me that Stewart wants his last work to be a woke peice of garbage just ruins his legacy for me. Like seriously is being woke that important?

All these actors and producers aren't really woke. They just want to appear as though they care because they think it's good for their image. It's literally this:

Nothing in that plot is sci-fi. If I make some lesbian romance novel and set it in the 30th Century, isn't sci-fiction just because one of the lesbians is a Martian.

Yeah, technically it is, but it's something that checks the basic boxes of what constitute the genre.

They took a good franchise and decided to make it about current issues and about themselves, it's not different from "American transfer student sent to Hogwarts" fanfics.

I have to think that the Rios and doctor story would have been pretty much the same if he was simply a rich guy with a private jet and a personal chef who could make 4 different kids of cake.

Look, it's a space ship, and it makes cake!

Bitch boomer behavior. The guy should have just retired comfortably and privately.
Alex Kurtzman, the guiding figure of the current Star Trek television franchise, first suggested that Picard’s evolution might mirror Stewart’s own. - Deadline
Of course he did.

Let's not pretend Logan was a good movie by any stretch of imagination.
You know what? I take back anything good I've said about the X-Men films.

They have messy plots, too many characters, can't decide on a timeline, are somewhat ugly. The audience coom themselves every time Xavier plays chess.

Eh that’s not entirely true.

You can have a romance with heavy sci fi elements. Things such as how the lovers try to communicate across species, sexual compatibility issues, things like telepathy or inhuman forms of physical contact(say like the Asari melding thing in mass effect). It would still be primarily a romance, but many elements would be impossible to exist in a realistic non sci fi setting.

The concept of the Borg Queen catches a lot of flak but, In the context of First Contact, The Borg Queen does sort of make sense. The Borg are a hive mind with a collective intelligence and are travelling back in time to a point where their collective may not even exist yet. No collective means they are stuck with the small number of drones they have aboard the sphere, so the Queen existing as an emergency commander due to being displaced from the rest of the collective in the future i feel makes sense without braking existing canon.

Ne excuses for her in Voyager though
I really liked the excuse in Shatner's Star trek book "The Return" for why they even went back in time in the first place.

It's Because Kirk and Picard teamed up and blew up the shit out of the Borg homeworld (the place VGER went to in the motion picture) . Resetting their ability to share collective power, skill sets and intelligence to square one. That was a pretty dam fun read. The Borg are legit scary in that one.

It was better than having the Borg origin be fucking space elves with magic atoms!

Even in the franchise's glory years, Stewart had a reputation for sticking his nose into creative decisions at times when he really shouldn't have done. For instance, he was the one who vetoed the original, more interesting script for Insurrection, even if Berman and Michael Piller managed to fuck up the end product entirely by themselves.
