Why are newer cartoons so shitty?

do you laugh at fart jokes on TV? No of course not, because you've seen cartoon characters fart a thousand times. Sit next to a 7-year-old watching the same cartoon. The jokes are fresh and funny to them, the situations are new and exciting, and they too will be saying 20 years later "Man, cartoons back in my day were so much better than this fart crap."

These things do come in cycles.

Toonboom.
Well-- more specifically 2D Puppets. While Toonboom wasn't the pioneer of 2D puppeteer-ing, it definitely made it immensely easier and it's the industry standard. New episodes of lazy cartoons have hardly any new artistic content in them. At the most maybe a couple of new backgrounds, props and two different faces.
Say what you want about The Simpsons but the old animation style vs the new one is really the perfect example of why a lot of cartoons seem less-- well, animated. This side-by-side really says it all.
Sure the new stuff is clean but man it's so freakin stiff.

That isn't to say that all cartoons with 2D puppets are lazy though.

Some shows actually utilize this stuff pretty well and are able to keep their cartoons fresh-- but a lot of shows don't. Especially super young kid shows.
This makes having young relatives a nightmare because when you see them you have to sit though shit like this: http://pbskids.org/wildkratts/

Well there's always Flash cartoons if you guys wanna watch those. Have you guys heard of this show called Salad Fingers?

To stay on topic, I guess it's because they've discovered a working formula in past works and don't care enough to take the risk with other ideas. A lot of what I've seen with new content is that it's in some way or another a regurgitation of past works from a decade ago, typically in a very obvious cash-in type of way.

Honestly, I think the independent circuit is producing much better content these days anyway.

Because they're cycling through old stories and content over and over again without much variation

  • Agree
Reactions: Shokew
Because Mr. Enter said so.

*Laughs Heavily* Yeah... NO.

Back on subject (and I am aware of how dumb as fuck this might sound) - I like to think things are the way they are, mainly because everyone is trying to be, or worse, yearning to be FUCKING. JAPANESE.

A) You. Are. Not. Fucking. Japanese.

2) Japan treats their animation like kid's stuff actually much more than we Americans do.

5) Yeah. I think that's everything.

Thing is, the Simpsons is one of the more lazy examples when it comes to that sort of animation. And it's been in steady decline since season 8 or thereabouts. This largely has to to with Matt not wanting creative (in this case, expressive) animation. In fact, that was the intended plan from the get go. It's just that the animators were much more talented/better at what they did back then as opposed to now.

Thing is, ToonBoom and Flash are supposed to be tools. And yet here we are- people who don't use them to their full potential. And the animation budget for the show is like what? a million or so dollars?
