Read some interesting tweets that Musk could turn Twitter into a cash cow fairly simply because the company is notorious in Silicon Valley for its labor costs. Overpaid superfluous employees everywhere. Twitter has 8000 employees and I've read credible people saying it could operate and achieve a large profit margin just by firing a bunch of people. That it could run with 2000 employees as a bare minimum (more likely 3000 or 4000). And since he will be the sole owner that profit goes straight to Elon and no one else (well, after taxes go to Uncle Sam).

Gonna go out on a limb here and say that Twitter, as an org, can probably run on less than 1000 people.

You need software back end, depending on where Twitter is hosted you may need some guys fine tuning your COTS/white label gear on a constant basis like Netflix has. But everything outside of the US can be run by a skeleton crew, relevant legal entities and whoever else you have on the custodial side. Can probably close most offices and just let one single office handle the entirety of the EU.

What I wouldn't know is how many people/contractors/etc you'd need for actual content moderation.

My theory on this - and it follows on from The Ugly One’s correct comment about Musk over-betting on full self driving and autonomous robots and shit like that -

Tesla *has* actually accumulated a fantastically powerful AI crunching supercomputer and an army of computer scientists to try to crack those problems, which are nigh on insurmountable.

Training it to go hog wild on the Twitter database and reform “the algorithm” in Musk’s vision would be childsplay by comparison.
Whether he bought Twitter for profit (no need to pay jannies, but still, 44 billion gorillion is a long payback time) or to achieve world domination and get people to stop making fun of him is less clear.

I would not be surprised if like half of Twitter are diversity hires and ever since everyone started working from home like 90% of the company just does nothing other than watch Netflix and blog all day. The maintenance crew are probably the only ones working for the most part.

I once had a low grade tech monkey job where it was all in-house and mostly just keeping track of version numbers, reverting shit if it stopped working after an update, or called in the programmer who had fucked it up in the middle of the night (least favorable option and one I would put serious effort into avoiding).

Anyway most of the rest of it was just waiting for console messages beeping and reporting shit wrong, and fixing it if possible, but the rest was stuff that could be scripted and by the end of the first month I'd more or less scripted myself out of a job although I didn't bother telling them that.

Having Florida Man as janny would be interesting.
