I theorize the Religious community in large wasn't interested in "gays". They were more interested in the fact that legally marriage was now between Men and Men or Women and Women, which undermined the Bible, which much of Western culture and law is based upon. Even Yuri Bezmenov when he came to America to do classes, virtually said, he was fine with people being gay, just do what you want to do in private.
