The thing is though, and maybe I'll catch shit for saying this, there's something inherently likeable about Phil, even though he's a total asshole. He reminds me of Ed from Ed, Edd and Eddy, in that regard.

Schadenfreude. He is an idiot, stuck on a loop of being mocked by everyone else for his own failings and having to carry on with them to stay relevant. It's like watching one of those comedies where everyone is an asshole, they suffer for it but you can't help but like the guys on the cast after watching them for so long!

Sterling, on the other hand, is simply an asshole. He isn't a lovable idiot, or even a slightly likeable one, he is a self-absorbed narcissistic asshole that fetishized himself into a hole and let his aspect of his life dominate everything else. Just see how disconnected from reality this guy is: A self-described socialist making tens of thousands per month and not spending a penny of it to help others, yet wanting to have his expenses he can clearly finance to be paid for by the State, the same guy that supposedly hates the greedy. Thinks he is a victim, an oppressed person despite living a very comfortable life, the likes of which the vast majority of the "privileged" people he hates so much can't afford: If this guy was really as persecuted as he thinks he is, he simply wouldn't be able to live as he does. And the cherry on top is he wants to be accepted, despite hating everyone that isn't on his specific subset of the general population, so much for tolerance!

Being entirely honest, I'm in favor of trans rights to a certain degree on the basis of the philosophical beliefs I hold, but despite this I fucking hate the troon culture you find on the internet. It's based on a fucking insane tribalistic worldview that you should respect every whim of theirs while they clearly hate everyone that isn't trans, sometimes merely for existing and at other times when they aren't "allies" (meaning they don't kiss their asses at every opportunity). It's closer to a Cult mindset than to a legitimate social movement, you're either in with their definition of "trans rights" or you're automatically a Nazi. It's fucking ridiculous!

This behaviour can be clearly seen on Sterling, just look at how much of an asshole he gratuitely acts like the second you say something he disagrees with. You can make your points in a civil, polite way and he will be hostile and throw all sorts of nonsense labels and insults at you. This guy is very close to becoming MovieBob with a wig, the transformation will be complete once he finally pisses off his viewers enough lol! Well, the thing about DSP for me is that I do remember way back when he got to be "big" for the time, and he had a complete and utter lack of grace, just the epidome of being and asshole, and his obstinate stance of blaming everything and everyone about every single thing (and no, I'm no talking about the vidja shit), so whatever changes he had, well can't say that fazes me much, but neither I have paid attention to Phill for a while, and to be fair, the people bitching about DSP got to be even more obnoxious than DSP himself back when it was cool to do it, so I dropped the whole thing as it was getting boring.

Still, said that, last time I saw Phil, couldn't help to feel some symphaty for him, visibly older and tired, graying out and with glasses and still snorting and playing games every single day to squeeze a living, it is just a miserable existence, he has no goals to achive, no prospects in live, he wasted his best years just playing videogames for the internet non stop and just can't do anything else, the man is a waste.

I don't feel sorry for him, because DSP did that to himself, but like Wings Of Redemption, I find the man too pathetic ina sad sack way to even find it funny.

Jim's peak were the old escapist days. He was entertaining, not overly repetitive, and even occasionally insightful. Hell he made a video (mildly) criticising Sarkeesian when she first popped up. Then the autism apocalypse happened and he lost his mind. He just went full gamers are scum, got shitcanned from the Escapist for refusing to shut the fuck up and went full repetitive leftist.

His squirty play and Steam Greenlight stuff was pretty good because he actually showed gameplay and did some over the top voice overs which with his persona fit perfectly. The "commentary" stuff got real stale real fast though.

He worked partly because he still had some passion for his job, but also because the editors forced him to keep his videos five-six minutes long and wouldn't let him do the same topics over and over again.

It'd be interesting to see what Jim would be like now if he'd just renewed his contract with Escapist for a couple more years rather than going off on his own. Sure, he'd have less money, but at least nobody would have heard of Laura K Buzz.

Phil is still just as much of a piece of shit, ranting about service workers, demanding $300 a day minimum from his viewers whilst he badly plays children's games and still angry at his parents for not buying him the correct Wolverine toy when he was 12. I'm not sure I understand the fundamental difference between Phil and Sterling that some people are arguing, to be honest.

If Phil's a lovable idiot, Sterling's a lovable oppressed. If Sterling's a narcissistic scammer, Phil's a lazy, entitled scammer. And sure, those two "don't hate me I'm just a [troon/average guy]" loopholes work on different people, but the underlying principles are mostly the same; Use a lovable (to some people) characteristic to deflect criticism/harassment and trap people into supporting you against it.

Only difference I could really fathom is for Phil not to actually be truly aware of what he's doing because he's that much of an idiot, but ever since the W.W.E. Champions thing, I don't think that's an option.
