Gibber Italicus Canary
In her breeder's defence, they've always said she had a legit birth defect (foals love getting tangled in womb, this one got a foot stuck over her snoot and dented it) but was genetically sound so they still bred from her. The scary thing is the people who saw this and were OMG goals. EgThe infamous Arabian mare Namusca.
The first time I saw photos of these birds I thought they were statues or taxidermies. To find out they were photos of living birds who are bred to contort like that was a horrifying realization. The posts were from tumblr, but they nevertheless puts into perspective how fucked up these pigeons really are: https://archive.ph/mVUSvFancy pigeon breeding can be pretty horrifying. The first one that come to mind is American Fantails whose bred so their heads sit above their ass. Their skeletons are deformed like that and they have extreme difficulty moving or eating.
i’ve seen these birds at shows. they can barely move and they jump at every noise because they cannot see what could be coming at them. they’re either skittish or completely shut down, and watching them try to get food is just heartbreaking (they have to turn sideways and swing their head down their tail to peck at their seed. i don’t know how they even manage to drink). sometimes when the try to walk to their food they nearly fall over because their tip-toes stance is what they’re like a majority of the time and their fan is heavy enough that they can barely support it with such delicate balance
anyone who has been around pigeons for any stretch of time knows that they are intelligent, social birds. they rely on nodding to communicate a large portion of their language, and guess what an American Fantail can’t do?
Their breeders brag about how difficult they are to produce and raise in terms of “only the most advanced can cultivate these”.
They are in it solely for the challenge of shaping the birds.
Those pigeons are living modern art.
That is literally all they are to the people who raise them.
Statues made of flesh, whose breeders see themselves as the most highly skilled of sculptors.
I forgot about the horror that is the Gibber Italicus Canary. This bird is created from intensive inbreeding of South Dutch Frill Canaries. They originated from Southern Italy and are considered "rare", most people who do want them want them for their posture. They have short life expectancy, inbreeding depression and usually die before they hatch. I couldn't find much information on how they eat, but I imagine it would be difficult as they always look like they're about to fall off the perch.
that would work well as a kaijuWhat they do to dogs is smalltime compared to what they do to fish, I could post telescope eyes or other fucked up goldfish morphs but I think most people know about them. Goldfish have a natural lifespan of about 20-40 years depending on how warm you keep them. Fancy goldfish rarely reach 10 due to their SMASHED and SLAMMED physiques. But the trend has spread to other fish including monsterfish, here's a Bichir
Now let's SLAM IT INTO THE GROUND
Funny how it also looks like a fucking frog, the toad phenotype is strong. They do the same thing to arowanas and a lot of other fish, just look up "short bodied" plus any fish's name.
Pretty thin competition for funny on this thread. The strongest feeling I get here is that these animals should be humanely euthanized and their breeders should be inhumanely euthanized. The Vs pics are still the funniest thing in this thread
Rumor has it (source long gone) there was a sibling to this horse with a very similar defect. Namusca had several very nice foals, none of which have the facial defect, and she is nicely built apart from the head, and a beautiful mover. In her breeder's defence, they've always said she had a legit birth defect (foals love getting tangled in womb, this one got a foot stuck over her snoot and dented it) but was genetically sound so they still bred from her. The mutant puppies already break my heart, but the mutant pigeons and these poor creatures make me crash into slumberI forgot about the horror that is the Gibber Italicus Canary. I have seen more and more people get burned out of keeping pets, at least that type of pet. Usually it goes that you deal with as long as you have that animal, put in all time, money and worry you can, but when you don't, death or giving it away, the exhaustion and grief sets in. It can hard say this not worth during, you love that animal and don't want feel like an assahole, but afterwards it's much easier to come that conclusion. I have seen it more with news, social media and even personal experience.Honestly, I haven't seen a single example where those breeds are better looking or more practical than non-meme breeds. But even to people who consider them better or cuter or whatever, it's only a recipe for heartbreak. Even if your pet is ugly as fuck you'll get attached (unless you are a fucking psycho**) and I can't imagine it being a happy time if your pet is blind/deaf/braindead, needing regular surgery or visibly suffering.
**Yes I know there are lots of people that abandon the puppy when it's not cute anymore. But I've also seen lots of the examples of the opposite, and the bad apples turn out to be assholes to humans as well, so yeah, fucking psychos.
Ok I know I'm very late but if anyone has any personal horse stories, please share. I have no personal experience irl in the horse buying/selling market because im not rich, but I like horses and learning/ researching about horse breeds just for fun... And you're right, arab horses in particular look so gross.I believe this thread is indeed the place. We’ve had cats and other animals pop up before. I’d be very curious to hear about the horse breeders. I knew arabs had to be fucked but I don’t know much about any other breeds that are falling victim to this kind of shit.
That's so depressing. The fans of this mutation are trailer trash who insist that because the dogs have blue eyes and slight pigmentation they're not AT ALL albinos, thus all your arguments are invalid. Meanwhile they trade tips on light sensitivity (the dogs squint ALL THE TIME if they're forced to go outside, and the behavior problems from being nearly blind yet bred to bbe alert and vigilant. It's a shitshow.
Some fancy goldfish, like fantails, orandas or ranchus usually aren't too deformed and can have normal lives if they're well cared for. It's particularly the competitively bred ones that are SMASHED and SLAMMED into organic golf balls, barely capable of swimming or functioning and with a head that looks like a deformed strawberry. But obviously, varieties like pearlscales or bubble-eyes are inherently cruel (as well as repulsive, why would people like an animal that has it's eyes out of it's orbits?).What they do to dogs is smalltime compared to what they do to fish, I could post telescope eyes or other fucked up goldfish morphs but I think most people know about them. Goldfish have a natural lifespan of about 20-40 years depending on how warm you keep them. Fancy goldfish rarely reach 10 due to their SMASHED and SLAMMED physiques.
The good thing (or at least when I used to be into reptiles) in Australia was that we did not go overboard with breeding mutations and other fucked up shit like that like they do in America.Have we discussed scaleless reptiles? Because I just saw a picture of a scaleless garter snake that really pissed me off. Scales are very important for burrowing snakes, otherwise any stray branch or sharp rock could easily cut them. Probably not the worst offenders though
What makes this morph particularly horrible is that bearded dragons are from the outback, they require very hot basking spots and a lot of UV. But without scales this can very easily burn their skin. This is one of those "cosmetic" reptile morphs that is just obviously, inherently abusive. It's funny because some of the defenders of the industry cite silkback bearded dragons as one of the shining examples of how the industry can self regulate. Most shows ban them, 'reputable' breeders don't breed them, but you can still easily find them. Like most scaleless morphs they also have problems with shedding (especially around the eyes), dehydration, increased vulnerability to infections, fungus, basically everything that the scales are there to fucking keep out.
Yeah the "fancy" goldfish thing is kind of a spectrum, really depends how bad you smash up the body, fantails and shubunkins have more in common with common goldfish than a lot of the other fancies in terms of body layout. I think the fucked up fancy body shapes also created the rumor that stunting is inherently cruel to goldfish because their organs keep growing while their body doesn't, which is only the case for slammed fancies who are forced to pack full sized organs in a half sized spherical body. Some fancy goldfish, like fantails, orandas or ranchus usually aren't too deformed and can have normal lives if they're well cared for. Pretty much all the reptile breeders I spoke to were all against stuff like that and wanted to keep the snakes looking nice but as natural as possible.
Ah yes, brain tumor fishyThere’s also the celestial eye goldfish, similar to bubble eyes except with their eyes pointed upward.

Another ugly, deformed looking type of fish is the flowerhorn. They first become popular in parts of Asia because their head shape was thought to represent good luck. Discarded flowerhorns have multiplied in some Asian waterways, where they’re considered invasive.

Some betta types like rosetails have such exaggerated fins that they impair the betta’s mobility. Betta in general are treated poorly, Pinterest is full of pictures of them languishing in vases and other DIY abominations.
