Varies dramatically. Sometimes it's based on geography. Sometimes there are special schools for gifted students that kids from all over the city (and not just in specific areas) can apply to.
In most areas though, it's always legal to specifically put your kid in a private school, but then you have to pay for that yourself. In some places, there are activists who are advocating for school voucher programs, where the state will help cover your kid's private education (by virtue of the fact you're pulling your kid out of public school, it can be argued you're entitled to your chunk of the taxes that would've gone to them).
And then there's also homeschooling, which varies in rigor in different places.

Nice to know he stayed alive out of spite for his ex rather than anything else, I feel bad for the melted candlestick he has for a current wife.
Adam all but ditched his career in Wordpress to become a 'professional' LEGO builder, and admits to leeching off his parents (at 37!) to make ends meet in this Twitter thread (archive). Wants to build a Youtube career of all things to save himself financially. However, if you flick through his Twitter feed, you'll see he's constantly buying expensive LEGO, overpriced food at Disneyland, pop culture garbage, and making lots of other non-essential purchases. Controlling one's spending will always be the more prudent course of action over trying to become a succesful Youtuber.
