Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Dev Claims Requests for a Black and/or Female Lead Were Rejected
"A former Respawn Entertainment developer has claimed that requests from team members to make the protagonist of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order female and/or Black were shut down. The response allegedly centered around the fact that the Star Wars franchise had a female lead after the movies' Rey, and the game already had 2 prominent Black characters.



Nora Shramek, a lighting artist at Respawn who worked on Fallen Order, tweeted (below) that multiple employees pushed for a Black and/or female protagonist during development, before the game launched in 2019, but were rejected because the game and wider franchise already represented those communities.

And this is probably the best received game since Disney bought the property...

"When I worked on [Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order], a lot of devs wanted and advocated for the main character to be Black and/or a woman," Shramek said in a tweet spotted by GamesRadar. The reasons apparently given for not going in that direction were because "we already have two Black people in the game" and "Rey is a woman and we can't do that too."

Following up on her previous tweets, Shramek added that these decisions were made at the Respawn level and were not the result of an "evil EA" or "overly controlling Lucasfilm/Disney."

"It was our team's game and yes, a few of the people with decision making power made choices," she said. The issue isn't with Cal or his actor, but "about opportunity lost".

Shramek clarified that these were her personal experiences with "a few people who had the opportunity to push change," and added that "I no longer work at Respawn and, from my understanding of people who do, there have been changes since my departure."

Episode 3 has grievous get caught off-guard by obi wan the second time they meet and he proceeds to get shot to death as a result. Filoni clone wars decided this was not the first time they fought and every fight was identical to the episode 3 fight but without grievous getting shot at the end.
It did this, of course, while overwriting the original miniseries that flowed from episode 2 to 3 pretty smoothly if not perfectly with a fucking several seasons of 30 minute episodes TV series that didn't even finish as it was originally intended before they canned it and started making sequels to it. When they DID get around to finishing the filoni wars, instead of doing the original end of the filoni clone wars with the unfinished final season episodes, they made that new one that takes place DURING EPISODE 3 for some fucking reason. That's a different problem than the grevious one but it all kinda adds up to a larger shitshow.

Oof, so I FINALLY got through the Young Jedi Knight Series. The Youtube channel that runs them through TTS was perfectly serviceable, though the last few books needed to be sped up cause they ran it too slow initially, and only remastered up to about book 10.

As usual for my travels through the EU Audiobooks, I'll contain my larger commentary to a spoiler, but in general it was a slog. It's not BAD, but it also isn't very engaging. Which is fine, it was written with a younger audience in mind, and clearly it accomplished that, seeing as how there is a fair bit of this I remembered twenty years after reading it. It also was definitely the hook that got me into the EU, I believe the first books I read were the AWFUL Jedi Prince series that I have vague memories of thinking was stupid even as a child. I like the cast of characters they came up with, but the plots leave a LOT to be desired.

Shadow Academy(Books 1-6)
The second Empire really sucks as a villain. They are treated like a legitimate threat, even by the New Republic, when they are so small they are barely worth mentioning. These books do a good job however of establishing the "cast" of Tenel Ka, Jaina and Jacen Solo, Lowbacca, M-TD, and Zekk. Overall, I think the real strength of this series is developing new characters. It handles established characters serviceably, but the real impact comes from the new characters in creates. I don't remember there being much Lowbacca after the series(and have been hesitant to look up, as I'm largely spoiler free for Fate of the Jedi), but Jacen and Jaina are large players to the future of the EU, and a lot of that is rooted here(even though Jacen's character gets thrown into the meat grinder when his death and Anakin's fall to the Dark side get flipped on order from Lucas in NJO)

Diversity Alliance(Books 7-11)
The Diversity Alliance is a little be better villain. It's scale to ability is still off, but not as badly as The Second Imperium. The Emporer's Plague is a great force multiplier for a Terrorist organization, even though it at face value is not as threating as the plot makes it out to be. Modern day, it's kind of fun to have a racist villainous organization known as the "Diversity Alliance". Zekk's foray into being a bounty hunter is extremely weak, and he very easily throws off the Dark side.

Black Sun 2.0(Books 12-14)
I couldn't find much behind the scenes info on the entire series. This feels like it started and quickly found out that Book 14 would be the ending. I thought I might not of read the entire series as a young adult, but I definitely did. The scene from Book 12 where a person walks through a monofilament line trap and is turned into Sashimi is a concept that always stuck with me strongly, but I also vaguely remember the sub trip from Crisis at Crystal Reef. It all comes to a close rather abruptly though.

Overall
The finger prints of Kevin J Anderson can be felt very heavily. It feels like references largely are pulled from the era he largely had a hand it. I can only think of three off the top of my head that come from outside books he wrote or I've read he had input on, a mention of the Noghri, a mention to Isard's retarded virus Gambit, and a mention of Truce at Bakura. I think KJA had a really bad perception of the Force, despite these books being what got me into the Star Wars EU, Zahn definitely shaped my view of the Force and the Jedi. Pretty much anything non-human is referred as a "monster" including sometimes sentient races. I'm often reminded of (I think it was) the second Castilla Trilogy book, where Luke is slaughtering Wampas on Hoth in a very un-Jedi way(they are made out to be minorly sentient, are being hunted for sport, and are defending themselves, and are treated as murder-fodder cause they are nonhuman).

So next up is New Jedi Order... it almost feels too soon. Jumping from the innocence of the Young Jedi Knights series to what I know happens in the NJO, I feel like I didn't get enough of some of these characters before they are thrown into a galactic fight for survival. I'm also a bit apprehensive, cause I remember( and I actually found some old internet post from when I was reading it) finding the start of the NJO to be really rocky. Vector Prime was okay, but I HATED the next two pairs of novels. I'm curious if I'll dislike them as much now as I did then, though.

It would be one thing to say that the destruction of the death star was a conjunctive effort where, if one failed, all failed as well and that Skywalker only delievered the last but very vital shot.

I have problems with Rogue One and Vader isnt one of them. People acting like he doesnt crack a soft sarcastic joke at the expense of his associates when he does ocassionally, especially if they are annoying him and/or getting in the way of what he wants. As long you are respectful to him and do your job, Vader will have no beef with you and might even let a few minor mistakes fly under his radar.

Vader is a surprisingly okay boss to work for if you arent an arrogant disrespectful prick.

To be fair, you can be a badass and, if you act like an arrogant prick with Vader, he will "humble" you. That didnt take away from Krennic, simply established he is extreme naive to think he can just request a meeting with the emperor, get told no by Vader and dont get the hint the conversation is over.

It really didn't feel like a weakness, because you do need to have an exhaust port for a really big gun so that the station doesn't end up cooking itself.

Considering that you needed to use the Force to even make the shot, combined with the fact that most of the Jedi were dead, they really didn't expect that anyone could make that impossible shot. Luke being able to make that shot was a full-blown miracle; that was the point of the first movie, that it would have been impossible without relying on a power that was beyond the material world.

Funny, that reminds me of a theory (and we had a lot of these back in the day) around the sequel trilogy where Poe was force sensitive and the similarities between him and Luke were intentional and that we would get our answers in TLJ when it came out...

That's weird, though, because blacks were very susceptible for conversion to Christianity or Islam. Two religions that saw the Chosen People as trash. One saw them as guilty of Deicide, the other saw them as unfaithful to God's prophets. The Ethiopians were one of the first Christian states in the pre-400 AD era, and many African kingdoms converted to Islam after the latter's meteoric rise to power in North Africa and the Middle East. Not exactly the kind of people who would be arm-in-arm with the children of Judah. Many blacks were still Christian, or Muslim, and those that fall between the cracks of those two faiths don't seem to align with the old Israelites that often.

Blacks were also very active in the anime community. During the height of the anime craze in the early 2000s, blacks and Latinos were very big DBZ fans, even though it's a cartoon about blonde white dudes punching robots, demons, and aliens.

Some SW fans I knew pretty much swore off SW books after NJO and LOTF. To them, Star Wars begins with Tales of the Jedi and ends with Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. The heroes of the OT succeed in rebuilding the Republic and the Jedi Order, they defeat the mightiest of the Ancient Sith Lords in a final battle on Korriban, and all's well that ends well. Democracy reigns, the Jedi are restored, and it's a happy fairy tale ending for this space fairy tale saga.

Because really, everything from the NJO books to LOTF onward kinda proves Palpatine was right about the galaxy and its elected leaders. They're too self-serving to do any real good. At least the corporate whack-jobs who would one day form the Separatist Council developed the economy in the Outer Rim, and for all his faults, Emperor Palpatine ran a tight ship where corruption and weakness was easily purged. But I suppose everyone got the best of both worlds with the Legacy Era's Fel Empire putting a Jedi instead of a Sith on the throne.

Well, it's not like this would be the first time. They did the same thing to Grievous vs. Kenobi, where Utapau was originally their first battle, but Lucas' TCW retconned that in its first 5 seasons, and now, we've got at least half a dozen battles between the two before Revenge of the Sith.

I suppose at that point, Anakin would still be new to the suit and new to the Dark Side, which would allow Kenobi to dance rings around him since he's not as agile or powerful as he used to be, which would lend credence to the line "when I left you, I was but the learner, now I am the master!"

Hell, make the main character black. But how the fuck is that the first thing you get to when you're making a Star Wars game?

Shit, give me a Mace Windu action game, and you're good to go. Have him go buck-wild like he did in the 2003 cartoon, and heck, make the final boss fight the duel in the Chancellor's Office, where you use all your skills and strength to defeat the Emperor before Anakin shows up.
