Both of his parents are engineers and wanted him to go to college so it's possible he picked the major to appease them. He had a lot of anxiety about them finding out he dropped out.

Engineering science is just supposed to prepare you for an engineering course at a university.

Just wanted to throw my thoughts in as well.

Engineering Science is considered an engineering program, but it's a major for undecideds with the possibility of choosing a specialization later in university. The idea with SUNY programs is that you go to a county community college to earn an Associate's degree at, then transfer in to a university to finish with a Bachelor's degree. This in theory makes SUNY schools quick and cheap to earn a college degree at, since credits transfer 1:1 and you start a SUNY university exactly where you left off at a SUNY community college. You can find the specific details of his major and the expected courses on the SUNY Broome catalog.

Being a freshman, it's correct that he would have still been doing mainly Gen-Ed classes. Using the website I linked above, he would have been doing the introduction math, English, chemistry, and humanities that first year students clear out before moving to more major-specific content. Based on the fact he dropped out of college on those classes, it's unlikely he would have been successful in any other major, be it engineering or non-engineering.

The last and somewhat coincidental note, is that the largest and most expansive SUNY university for engineering students in the state is SUNY Buffalo. If he actually went through with the program instead of dropping out there's a very likely chance he would have ended up in the very same city he chose to shot up.
