Saints Row thread

Never played a Saints Row game. I have played every GTA game since GTA 3 though. Never owned a PS3 or 360 so I didn't play them. I only recently played GTA 4 on PC back in 2016.

Maybe I'm just sick of open world crime games, but this shit looks just like Saints Row 3 to me but with bullet sponge enemies, zoomer fortnite styling and big empty boring desert.

It looks like cringe inducing SJW cancer.

My take-aways from that video:

- Holy shit, why does the gameplay seem so Goddamn slow? It feels like it's at least 25%-50% slower than it should be.

- The voice acting is flat. I've seen better work in GTA V Role-play.

- Completely changing your looks anywhere is pretty cool.

- Gunplay looks just as boring as I thought it would be.

3 months till release..
Wouldn't be surprised if there's another delay, but man this looks mediocre as fuck.

To catch you up as quickly as possible:
  • 1 is okay but dated, you dont need to play it. It's on 360 only.
  • 2 is everyone's favorite. PC port is bad, 360 version is the best. PS3 is probably also fine. Basically feels like GTA4 from an alternate dimension where they ran with the wackier side of San Andreas rather than trying to make something gritty and realistic. There was gonna be a reworking of the PC version of 2, but the guy working on it fuckin' died, so that's not happening.
  • 3 is all wacky zany zoomershit and has characters like a stereotypical pimp who talks entirely in autotune. It is drenched in 2011 culture. Runs pretty well on everything it was ported to. The remaster has performance issues though, so dont play that one. 3 is generally regarded as a good game, but not as good as 2.
  • 4 was originally DLC for 3 and it shows. They went with a whole superhero/alien invasion theme and your character now has superpowers like in Infamous or Prototype, rendering carjacking generally worthless. I didn't like it, some people did though, so ymmv
  • Gat out of Hell is standalone DLC, basically. It's okay. It's a musical that takes place in Hell and you can play as Johnny Gat and fly around with big ol' angel wings. Weird and not great, but cheap and short, so whatever
2 and 3 are the only ones that matter. The best Saints Row experience is Saints Row 2, on Xbox 360. There, you're all caught up, now have fun with us bashing the shit out of this new piece of crap.

One my nephews gifted me SR2 on Steam a while back. I built a PC for him using some of my old parts, so he is new and doesn't know all the shitty PC ports from the 360 and ps3 era of gaming. I had to warn him not to buy the Dark Souls port and get the remaster instead. I didn't want to walk him through trying to fix the old port up enough for him to play it.

I don’t think anyone needed any more signs to see that it’s over but… it’s over.

This one quote from Volition is also irritating the shit out of me. You do realize that what you’re doing isn’t a first in the slightest, right? Hell, the game you all seem to despise so much, Saints Row 2, was doing this long ago without having to brag about it. There’s a mission, Bad Trip, where the Playa will get high from secondhand smoke in the air. If you choose the Hispanic voice, the Playa will speak Spanish during the mission.

Side note: This GameSpot article I took that quote from is surprisingly negative towards the game. If you look around, there are some articles that are concerned that the game looks empty but are sugar coating it with a bunch of empty praise. This dude didn’t even try. The article used to be even more harsh on the game as well, at one point the title of the article straight up called the game boring and mediocre. I’d like to say maybe for one a gaming news site decided not to be a shill rag, but it’s more likely that a check from Deep Silver bounced and now they’re getting revenge.

EDIT: I’ve been hearing that the Saints Row reboot will have only 25 main line missions, which is extremely concerning. Every other mainline Saints Row game has had more content, even if some of it was just padding. There are some that are saying that Volition will compensate by removing filler and making the missions longer but I see that as being :optimistic: They’re also saying the ability to take on the gangs in whatever order you please isn’t going to be returning which is baffling, as that has been a staple of the series.
This game has definitely gone through some sort of development hell. The game received a six month delay for QC, yet the game still looks empty and barely finished. I hope a Volition dev goes rogue and tries to explain what the hell happened behind the scenes.

EDIT 2: A lot of the footage they’re showing isn’t exactly new. Much of the footage they’ve taken comes from parts of missions they’ve shown in the past, just without useless developers commentary in the background. Once again, this makes me wonder how ready this game is.

I don't buy games from racist companies :smug:

It's like nails on a chalkboard levels of cringe.

Ah, yes, the burning question on every gamer's mind: how many """diversity""" checkboxes did the dev team check? Who fucking cares about passion for the craft, technological and design innovation, or enthusiasm for a franchise? All I wanna know is how many niggers and queers HR managed to dredge up so they could brag to all their friends about working in such a diverse and vibrant company.

It's funny, Saints Row was a diverse series from the beginning, it's just that Volition wasn't patting themselves on the back for it. They also didn't feel the need to make the games preachy, something I have faith the reboot will try to overcompensate for (after all, they've already gone out of their way to censor returning brands).

I can also see the game struggling with content, Agents of Mayhem was a tiny world stretched out with copy-pasted dungeon layouts.

The want the player to make uglier characters compared to Cyberpunk 2077.

I think what I miss most from SR2 (I don't have a 360 to play the first) is the dynamic between the Saints and the rival gangs. You do feel like the gang is getting stronger while the other gangs are getting weaker and desperate during the story mode while seeing the rival gangs be hostile to each other. I wish I can get that gang dynamic then the goofier aliens and computer simulation plot.

I really hope this bombs even worse than Agents of Mayhem.

It's not just the woke shit, it's the fact the game is so aggressively medicore and old. I feel absolutely no reason I'd need to play this over Saints Row 2, 3 or even GTA Online.

But at this point I wouldn't be surprised if the Zoomer Fortnite crowd ate it up.

2 with gentlemen's mod actually.

doubt it, nothing they did is really new or interesting, and even the fortnite graphics don't mean much when zoomers can a) just play fortnite with all the shit they already grinded out b) can show that shit off to people not stuck in a singleplayer game. if they want to do shit in a gta game, they'll just play GTA or more like online (to reinforce point b again). seriously, why would anyone play that over any other game?

seriously the gameplay looks like a crappy GR wildlands/watchdogs mix, and no one is jerking themselves over ubisoft games anymore (if they ever did). also, fucking firefly had cursing in chinese 20 fucking years ago, and even an abomination like breakpoint allowed to change your look everywhere. none of this is new, so all they could ride on is the story, which will most like be complete dogshit.

highly doubt anyone will even remember the game at the end of the year, if people even notice (fuck, just remembered, isn't it epic exclusive for at least 6 months? there's goes word of mouth).

What's funny is that the original Saints Row was meant to compete with GTA: SA. Moreso, that story was written by White dudes in the Midwest. Yet, they wrote a better gangsta story than this train wreck. Maybe instead of focusing on "diversity," focus on talent and FUN.

Volition's had a good run. If this flops and ruins the company, I'm all for it.

This is such a weird take. Tons of people jerk themselves over Ubisoft games. Far Cry 6 saw 25% more engagement over Far Cry 5. Where is this idea that normal gamers don't care about these games coming from?

Yeah, the game looks mediocre as fuck but it feels like you have no idea how retarded the gaming masses really are these days.

I'm seriously getting tired of stories having to include absolutely everyone in them, why can't we just get stories for specific types of people instead of trying to appeal to literally everyone at once? Just make a game about gang shit please for the love of God...

everyone is shitting on the ubisoft formula for over half a decade now if not longer, watchdogs legion was a bomb, ghost recon is dead; valhalla and fc6 had a massive marketing campaign either riding of celebrity performances and/or current hot flavors like vikings (and only the latter seemed to have an effect on it's reception given the user score for fc6, also leaning more towards rpg).

a game that doesn't look very special, in a setting everyone has seen way too often, by a literal who dev most zoomers don't even know? fuck agents of mayhem looked more attractive on paper given everyone was still high on marvel capeshit.

You base this off hardcore forum dwellers which is hardly "everyone".

Ubisoft as a company might not be able to handle their finances correctly, but the idea that people don't care or are not playing the games is laughably out of touch with people who buy and play video games as a whole.

We're not going to buy it, but that hardly means the dumbed down masses are not going to buy it. It's honestly a crap shoot these days. I hope they don't, but we're talking about a world where GTA Online is still one of the most played games.
