Flat-Earthers are just plain nuttier characters than anti-vaxxers, first off. The implications of a vaccine conspiracy are really mundane while the flat earth leads you to some fantasy land where the hollow earth is full of dragons and hobbits or something like that. Second, the experiments showing the earth is round are independently neat to see as a cool science experiment; there's no equivalent pro-vaccine experiment other than saying "clinical trial data showed more benefit than harm."

It's actually more complicated than that. The whole Flat Earth thing originally started as a "cool science project" that was trying to measure the curvature of the Earth by watching a boat with tall flag on a long straight river disappear behind the horizon.
It never did though (because of atmospheric refraction, which is also what causes Fata Morganas) causing the whole flat Earth thing to get its start.
It is not that easy to prove that the Earth is actually spherical unquestionably.
What makes Flat Earthers obviously deranged is their belief of a massive perfect global conspiracy where every scientist and government is lying to them without clear motives. Which isn't all that different from anti-vaxxers.

They read the first part, that unlimited tolerance leads to the end of tolerance, and the last part, where he says we should reserve the right to suppress intolerance and not tolerate it, and leave out the rest of his argument. By doing this they skip straight from "there are intolerant people" to "we persecute people who express views we consider intolerant".

What the miss is the middle, where he said:

I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be unwise.

As far as he was concerned, the "intolerance of intolerance" should be a last resort; an escalation to match the opposition, rather than a brutal suppression of intolerance speech, merely because it feels uncomfortable. Suppression of intolerance should only come at the point when the intolerant are employing violence and suppression of their own.

His paradox is used to justify all kinds of hate speech law and the suppression of disagreement with current sociopolitical dogma, under the justification that "intolerance should not be tolerated". That's the twisting that gets me. He would be apoplectic at the way his words are used to justify the wholesale suppression of dissent from the mainstream, especially given his entire philosophy required such dissent.

I just want to know how flat eartherers can explain Oceania and such. I mean, I'm fairly certain I exist.

Funnily enough, that's where I started from, as well. What really made me do a double-take to that was watching demonstrations with modern cameras sporting some impressive zoom capabilities. People would take these things out to a shoreline on a nice clear day and be capable of zooming in so far as to pull boats back into view which should have been completely over the curvature by that point. You could not see these boats (wake and all) without the aid of the extreme zoom lens. As far as I could tell, they were in crystal clarity, too. I do not see how it was (or could have been) simply just a mirage.

I would certainly hope you've changed your own beliefs in a myriad of ways throughout your life, for example. Personally, I believe we're being lied to about many, many things in life, and I just want to figure out some answers (come what may). You don't (or shouldn't) do that through zeal and rigidity. I don't know what the Earth is shaped like for certain, but hardly anyone actually does. I do know that I've seen enough information that SCIENCE!™ cannot/will not answer (not to mention the hilarious amount of literal caca NASA puts out) about the widely pushed/accepted model to call bullshit on that, though.

However, Flat Earth, Geocentrism and the Tartarian Empire are poisoned salt licks designed to weaken and destroy anyone asking questions. The basic design of these weapons is to take real informational problems we have, such as our science community lying to us or our history being rewritten/flawed, and then place them into artificially exaggerated situations that have no possible basis in reality. The afflicted subject becomes overly concerned with complex fantasy scenarios that make great, sweeping promises about the potential of humanity and are generally designed to make the target become bogged down with excessive, meaningless extra information so as to make any point they have to say on the subject unintelligible.

What's more, the immediate, short term use of these weapons is to disrupt honest discussion of the real flaws in the science and history of the accepted paradigm. Which you have done, directly, with your first post in this thread, interrupting one of the very people I was talking to and asking genuine questions to with your bullshit. We were even discussing false or imperfect history. I find it curious that your showboating carnival ride arrived only days after the topic of false or imperfect history was broached by several people, not just including myself, there were other conversations ongoing that I don't necessarily believe in or agree with, but at least what they were proposing was novel and I was genuinely interested to hear them elaborate upon it. Which is not the case with you. With the flat earth thing, I noticed the same thing- it's extremely marginal at best and was being propped up as this huge threat to Science and Truth. Why were they doing it, well, that's the part we can debate but it was obviously astroturfed. I don't think it's because the earth is actually flat and they don't want us to find out, it's far more complicated than that. Trying to get people with other sets of view sucked into it so they could look dumb by being labeled "flat earthers" was the largest piece.

Replying to this again to say I agree with you much more just seeing the trajectory of the thread after you brought the topic up. Not trying to call anyone out, but this topic does seem to have a special way of really getting under people's skin, regardless of what 'side' they're on.

I ask because I see this frequently where people with no inside connections vehemently claim Bob Saget abused kids on set with total confidence but zero evidence other than a comedy roast.
