My best friend told me how their toy terrier's sire literally ate enough dried apricot to enter diabetic coma and die. Dogs eat first and think second.
Hope yours is ok.
He is, now, several hundred dollars later. He's actually really smart by dog standards, but that doesn't put him at a level where he can understand "tannins" and "kidney failure." Which is the problem with this whole idea.

My little monster once ate several bars of hotel soap and went to the vet promptly. He was fine. I was thinking at the time, why can't they put something in it to make it taste bad so nothing eats it? And then I remembered it already tastes like soap.

“The public hasn’t twigged to the link between the dog’s higher risk of health issues, their decision to buy that type of breed instead of a more moderate breed, and the fact that they’re imposing a lifetime of suffering on these dogs,” Dr O’Neill said.

wonder what this guy would think of a totally slammed toad
Saw them discuss this recently on the news. People aren't going to stop buying them because a lot of people are plain selfish and want what they want. A number of dog owners truly don't care for their dog as a living sentient thing but rather a toy to show off and a subservient to lord over. These are the types that tend to be obsessed with purebreeding and "breed standards" (not all but a lot).

I have a relative just like that who owns these dogs. When one needed an airway surgery so she could breathe they talked about it as if it was some cool and interesting trivia about the breed rather than a horrible sign these things are physically not fit for basic living and functioning, just in service of a "look". People won't stop buying them so the solution is to stop breeding them. I've long thought backyard breeding should be banned and anyone planning to breed dogs to sell puppies should have some kind of training, checks and a license. It wouldn't be 100% effective but it would prevent so much suffering for the animals and wasted resources in shelters etc.

A certain amount of social shaming could help as well, if widespread enough. Nobody wants to buy the smashed and slammed frogdog if it reaches a certain level of being associated with pathetic idiots who jack off dogs on Instagram. It can't be too sappy or guilt-trippy- these aren't liberals, after all- it just needs to be associated with the passe and embarrassing. Something your cousin or ex could clown on you for on Facebook.

That could be said about a lot of things. That's communal fragmentation though, you can't effectively exert social pressure on people anymore due to communal flow (I don't know if that's an actual term sociologists use, but if not I call dibs on it: similar to how exchange of individuals between populations strongly resists genetic drift, exchange of individuals between populations strongly resists memetic drift)

Your cousin or ex could clown on you for this stuff on facebook, in fact they're some of the only people who can; so long as strong social flow exists and people are able to simply associate with whoever they want, there will never be an effective consensus beyond that. We have entire groups of people online who've managed to convince themselves the idea that being morbidly obese is detrimental to health is propaganda invented by the healthcare industry, among any number of other examples; if they can accomplish that, do you think they couldn't resist social pressure to not do this sick fucking shit with animals?

You're absolutely right gender studies, social pressures could help. That's 90% of the reason the world is going down the tubes, because community and thus mechanisms of social regulation have gone extinct over the last 20 years.

Licensing and checkups will help a little bit, but you can be a registered breeder in the top rungs of an esteemed Kennel Club and still be breeding shit like this:

"reputably bred" is the empty corporate jargon of dog breeding.
A pedigree doesn't guarantee anything except for who the dog's parents are, and many breed clubs don't even have a list of mandatory health scores for parents before breeding. It's just a series of forms you print out and send them money lol, zero inherent health guarantee. It's all up to how much the individual breeder cares.

Anyhow, Covid.

@Spennychu

Adopting out dangerous dogs or dogs with undisclosed medical problems etc. should be criminal. I am totally in support of the sentiment behind "adopt don't shop" but shelters are becoming so fucked up in so many ways I can't blame people for getting their dogs from breeders rather than rescues. This meme basically sums it up:

I remember the Nala situation. I'm no expert but I wouldn't mind helping create an OP, if it's something people think will be interesting enough with sufficient content. I could be wrong but it just seems a little specific. Personally I wouldn't mind this thread expanded to include sperging about animal rescue and husbandry, but I get why others might not want it to.
There is SO MUCH untapped milk in the animal rescue community.

Oh yeah, I'm not talking about the kind of thing we have now with kennel club breeders and "pedigrees" etc. I mean licensed to be a dog breeder more focused on the ethical and health aspects and proving you're taking proper care of the animals. "Licensed to practice" basically. Not sure how that would be reinforced and it is optimistic, but it would be nice. Kennel clubs are literally full of some of the biggest snobs and shitheads who will insist their German shepherd with its rear end almost dragging along the ground is "perfectly healthy! Mutts get hip dysplasia too, checkmate!" Breed fanciers might know these are real problems but they just don't care. Also look at that Neapolitan mastiff - looks like someone poured a liquid dog onto a skeleton. Imagine your bottom lip hanging halfway down your neck.

"Covid" of "DA Worlds URS Kennels". As terrible as this toad breeding is I can't help but laugh at the ghetto as fuck naming of these sorry dogs. Like imagine you're born as one of these animals and just to add insult to injury you're christened "Covid", "Taliban" or "Cock Block" by some crackhead swigging cough syrup? It's just so hopelessly awful you have to laugh.
This "kennel" also has another toad straight up named "Virus", who looks to be Covid's brother (who can tell though, it's probably also his father, grandfather, uncle and cousin).

This "breeder" has some complete abominations. This dog's face basically says, "Kill me now, please!" The poor critter looks like he would barely be able to walk. He's only seven months old.

Not only are these the ugliest dogs I have ever seen, but they are the ugliest mammals I have ever seen.

got this off /an/, what the FUCK happened here

Good Lord. They said those were female. Being stillborn, I suppose they at least won't have to go through a life where they suffer from constant joint pain, respiratory distress, and being bred at each heat (and needing c-sections) until they die young from one of the many ailments they suffer from.

I'm fortunate enough to own a couple dog breeds that still have lots of reputable working lines being bred from, so they're pretty healthy. But unfortunately, SMASHING and SLAMMING is not just confined to the American melanated class. Serbs (aka the blacks of Europe) have taken the Rottweiler and slammed it so far into the ground that they look like Bordeaux Mastiffs with German Shepherd hips. (No, that dog is not taking a poop, that's their posture).
