He was/is the biggest world of warcraft streamer. When he decided to give final fantasy mmo a go, they got so many new people they had to close the ability to make new accounts for a while to keep servers stable. And that game has been bigger than WoW for a year or two now.

The Pirates movies made less and less money because everything after the first fucking movie is god awful garbage.

I stand by the fact that the original trilogy was reasonably fine - there's some weird choices and filler in the third movie because they had a premise for 2.5 movies and stretched it to three, but as far as multi-movie arcs go for characters, the trilogy did fine. The real issue came from when they decided "People love Captain Jack, we can continue this series with only Captain Jack." The movies were garbage when they took 'funny side guy' and made him the main entree. Despite that, the movies still made millions because apparently Disney was right, people will watch anything as long as Captain Jack is in it.

But that's not a good thing for Amber Heard, because if they were milking their Pirates cow long after its death simply because they could do so with Johnny/Jack, them firing Johnny can't be because he was losing them money. There's a reason why they're hoping they can recast Jack Sparrow and continue the series and it's because they fired Johnny over Amber's allegations, not because Johnny's acting as Jack Sparrow was losing them money.

Basically. He's been a heart throb/sex object for female audience for a while - he was also Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones so people have seen him mostly naked and all uber manly. Nobody cared about Mera. The fact that when the women cleaned up their drool the movie was also having fun with itself and allowing the characters to smile and/or laugh and show flashy colors all over the place meant the guys who went along with their girlfriends also liked it and that equated to mass market appeal. The success had nothing to do with Amber or Mera and WB knows it. That's why they've cut her back to almost nonexistence for the second one.

Whole thing made me think of how fucking awful I'd be if I tried being a lawyer.

Because Depp's lawyer had to stay cool as a cucumber and quickly realize the doctor was launching into that spergery to avoid letting any words get put in his mouth, but at the same time Depp's lawyer had to not even try pointing it out directly and instead just let the doctor put on the show himself. The guy didn't come across as the least bit forceful with his questioning, instead leading his questioning in such a magnificent way like when he got to the Willy Wonka bit that had to have made the guy realize how ridiculous he going to look which resulted in him asking the judge pitifully if he really had to answer that question.

I feel like it's easy with hindsight to realize it's worth letting someone hang themselves on the stand, but the whole idea of having to figure that out in short order and figuring out how to adapt your questions to really let the guy make an ass of himself just makes those lawyers seem so fucking masterful to me. All strikes me as evidence of just how amazing a good lawyer can really be.

It is the perfect example of someone getting a role that they did not have the acting chops to have earned yet. Most of the time when an actor gets a role like this - like the girl who got the lead female role in the Last Airbender movie simply because she was the daughter of one of the producers - it's a symptom of a shoddily made work, so that movie flops anyway, and a role that should have been a 'breakout' becomes a black mark that ruins their career. Every once in a while, though, we get a situation like this one where Amber Heard's personal connections with the upper echelons of WB (through Johnny Depp's connections with WB) got her a role she wasn't ready for, but the movie itself was able to carry her anyway. Then the movie is a hit, but nothing happens either positive or negative to the actor/actress. Studio execs aren't as dumb as people act: just because you're in a big role in a successful work doesn't mean they can't tell that you can't act.

Did the Harry Potter kids get roles early on in the Harry Potter movies? No, not really. They were bad actors even if their movies were good. They only started to get new roles once they grew up and their acting improved. Even Daniel Radcliffe, the title role, only got like one pretentious theater play where he had sex with a horse. (It was actually so bad that Daniel started to have a breakdown by the end of the movies because he couldn't get other roles and thought Harry Potter was consuming his life and ruining his career) Meanwhile David Tennant showed up as a one-off villain with minimal screen time in one movie and moved on to become the next Doctor Who lead. It follows the same rules as any other kind of promotion: you can get boosted up by something to get a bunch of eyes on you, but if what you provide sucks, all those eyes are going to immediately turn away and look at something else. Amber Heard just isn't a good enough actress, at this point in her career, to have landed the role of Mera. That's how she can star in a top 25 grossing movie and not see even a tiny bump in her career as a result.

Ironically enough, had she stayed with Johnny Depp and not dropped a big one on his bed when he ran away from her for the umpteenth time, she would still be getting bigger and bigger roles. Not because of the abuse allegations, but because Hollywood is full of nepotism and Johnny is a pushover.
