It could just be pregnancy weight gain that she hasn't lost yet. Some women gain 100 pounds during pregnancy, mostly water. Every woman has weight to lose after birth, the body doesn’t just go back to the way it was before conception. Most women look about five months pregnant when they leave the hospital with the baby, and no one really tells that will happen to first time mothers so it's one of those "fun" surprises for them. New mothers are so busy with the baby that a lot of them don't have the time it takes to dedicate themselves to losing weight - and they definitely don't have the energy.

ETA: also, you're not supposed to diet while pregnant or breastfeeding. Breastfeeding takes around 4,000 calories a day, from what I understand, so women are told to eat whatever and however much they want.

Etata: I'm a tard who can't math. Apparently breastfeeding burns an average of 500 calories a day. I don't remember where I got the 4,000 number from. It's really likely they said something like "up to 3,000" as in total calories burned per day and my tard brain just totally misremembered that. Soz.
