President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

3. Ukraine has many nuke stations. Chernobyl has affected EU and as far North as Swedes and Norway. Shooting artillery into nuke stations, cutting off power to cooling to waste and reactors can very quickly become very global problem, in the sense of EU getting radioactive and 1/3 of global grain supply becoming radioactive. Ukraine can also have capability and brains to go nuclear power and missile tech yet again.
This is one of the stupidest things anyone has said since this all started.. The US will merc any Ukie with a nukie without hesitation, the last thing anyone wants is more nukes over there. btw no one is shooting artillery into nuclear plants

If I remember rightly though Ukraine was on the list of "Virtual Nuclear Powers" same as the Japanese.

Irrelevant and the whole point is insane. Rereading it, it comes off as some sort of twisted blackmail. "No it is everyone's problem because the world must protect our nuclear stations or else! And Ukraine can have nuclear missiles again!" Absolute lunacy. :lunacy:
If that was the Ukrainian government's official take I'd be in support of shutting down nuclear everything in the country indefinitely and I'm a proponent of nuclear power. If that's anyone's stance, they should be punished.

Ghengis Khan was Ukrainian.
Julius Caesar was Russian though.
Wrong, Temujin was actually a Russian too. Das rite west boi, we wuz khanz n blyat.

Ukraine ran the Soviet Union. Everybody knows that. Ukrainians even killed the Czar. Heck, even Stalin was Ukrainian.
Unironically this. The most prosperous and innovative the Union was under the Ukrainian Khruschev. Hell, two times even. Khruschev made USSR truly great, while Brezhnev has finally allowed the generations that lived in abject poverty to finally trade their "sacrifice" for a flat with a toilet and a kitchen.

Russians hate them both, while the Moustachioed Georgian always tops their "best ruler" ranks.

T-80BV spotted on trains headed from Moscow area, likely to replace losses suffered by the 4th Guards Tank Division. Pretty interesting, I’m wondering if they’ve got spare T-80U or not now.

they have been scraping a few tanks here and there, like literally a few coming from Dagestan. Not tens, but single digits from wherever they can find them. There are proving grounds around Moscow for research

... btw no one is shooting artillery into nuclear plants

dude, they used artillery in Chernobyl, outright shelled Zaporizhya station (with vids) which is one of the biggest in EU, there are vids of cruise missile over Zap nuke station ... where were you? Zelensky has been crying to EU Int atomic agency etc.

Not to mention the whole Russia chernobyl adventure (digging in the forest, looting labs and monitoring stations) They had no power for a over a week ...

Well, they gave up their nukes in return of assurances to their territorial integrity ... including by Russia ... didn't work well for them, did it?

Nuke power is future, they have a whole bunch already, no need to shut those down like Germany in exchange for burning russian gas. But there has to be some way to protect nuke stations from dumb russia bros trying to steal washing machines and rape some kids. If not nukes, there has to be some way for them to protect their home. No one is going to feel safe by not doing anything, so it's going to be some diplomacy with mutual defense treaties or nukes or a wall against their crazy neighbor.

So basically, if you removed Ukraine from the Soviet Union, they'd have fallen flat on their asses faster than they actually did in real life? Interesting.......

not only ukraine, baltics and belarus were also pretty important centers of high value soviet industry, along with the warsaw pact trade partners (east germany in particular was the most developed economy of the eastern block)

Are you starting to understand why Putin is so keen to put the old band back together? It isn't about NATO having nukes near Moscow or whatever. It is the natural and manpower resources in the Ukraine. It is an agricultural and industrial heartland. Like the midwest is to the USA. Russia must have it if it wishes to be anything but a second-rate decaying power.

I distinctly remember Russians mocking Gorbechev when I was there in '91 for sounding like he spoke Russian with a Ukranian accent. Was kind of funny, and a sign the government wasn't feared anymore. Kind of like how his birthmark had stopped being magically erased from pictures and art.

They didn't shell Zaporizhya. That you still push this narrative says a lot but isn't surprising.

You're welcome to show the video of shelling at the plant but it doesn't exist which is interesting considering the hours of footage. What did the news all over the world claim was shelling? Illumination flares. A small fire started on the campus no where near any of the reactors which were never at risk.

Zelensky using hyperbole early on to try to get direct foreign intervention is just him doing his thing and should surprise no one.

This has nothing to do with the claims of shelling nuclear power plants. Regarding your initial claim that Russia shelled Chernobyl (see above), the only claim is that a (singular) Russian artillery shell hit a radioactive waste area and spiked radiation levels, though it was never corroborated. That is to say, it was one of the many lies told.
(article)

As well, going off of memory, the worst the Ukrainian workers at Chernobyl reported was occasionally hearing artillery being fired off in the distance which isn't saying much since it can be heard for miles and wasn't aimed at Chernobyl.
Well, they gave up their nukes in return of assurances to their territorial integrity ... including by Russia ... didn't work well for them, did it?
Nuclear weapons keep the US at bay, it doesn't improve your relationship with them. No one in the world wants Ukraine to have nuclear weapons except people like you.
Nuke power is future, they have a whole bunch already, no need to shut those down like Germany in exchange for burning russian gas.
Chopped off the rest of your spiel because it's irrelevant seething. I agree nuclear power should be the future and it'd be dumb to revoke existing reactors... normally. That said, if people in power shared your views on the matter and reactors are to be used as some sort of international extortion anytime Russia acts up then clearly it's in the best interest of everyone else to remove that problem.

I have heard that Hitler was actually a Ukrainian.
Shit, the whole Nazi party was Ukrainian!

I just checked. It turns out my dog, is in fact, Ukrainian! My computer mouse? The sub I had for lunch? My laundry detergent? The right turn signal in my car (but not the left - chekist bastard left turn signal)? The first three seasons of Miami Vice?ALL UKRAINIAN.
Really makes you think, bros. :smug:
Imma stop now except to mention some vodka-soaked vatnik went on a tear once in a military aviation forum back in the 1990s about how Christ, was, in fact, born in Russia.

You mean the days when they had prosperity, industry, food, working infrastructure, and no western faggots dragging away Ukrainian children?
Keep coping, Commieboo. At least after the USSR fell, they weren't getting conscripted into an army ruled by sodomites to defend a caste of party bosses who make the Rothschilds look charitable.

I always wonder how much better the world would have turned out if Kennedy and the Secret Service had let Khruschev visit Disneyland?
