  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Yeah, I've always seen this trend among modern kids. They put everything on the table, "in true boomer fashion" like an user said some time ago.
When I was a teenager, I've posted in many forums, but no user of sane mind (me included) ever thought about using his real name, and even less using his true fucking face as an avatar.
I know I sound like a disgruntled boomer, but KIDS THESE DAYS have grown up with sites like Facebook, that encourage them to put every personal info they can online. Of course, the results are catastrophic: doxxing them is trivial, you just have to look for their true name on Google and you'll surely find a page, somewhere, where they've written their true name, all of the usernames they have used, links to their accounts on a shitload of sites, etc.
After all, "digital native" doesn't mean "clever": it just means that you're born with a fuckin tablet in your hands, not that you know how to use it and how to behave online.
The flipside of this are people terrified of the idea that some random person on the internet can know their name or that your life will be catastrophically destroyed because there's a picture of you in existence when for decades there were literal thousand page books containing full (first last, middle) name, full address, and full phone number, of everyone in the city....sent directly to the door of everyone in the city....and no one cried about it....but now you're terrified that some guy without a passport on a mountain knows what your apartment building looks like on the internet.

Are you scared that some unhinged Minecraft kid from Venezuela is going to wait outside your work and run you over? When literally any random unhinged person you see at any point anywhere in the physical world could pull out a knife and shove it threw your throat? Walk into Walmart wearing your nametag from work and realize the horrendous fuckup you just made and immediately move across the country and have a panic attack. You're like infinitely more likely to be SEVERLY NEGATIVELY IMPACTED by someone in real life (with or without knowing you're cool name!) then by some guy finding out "holy shit Tim uses the internet"

I know the FBI is really interested in your roblox collection or whatever but you can calm down a bit there Kyle

And all you shit-stabbers giving me negative points want to do a reach around on null as well.
Felted and buck broken. Seething. A true Dilbert.
Dis you. 103-1035076_gondola-meme-png-transparent-png.png

Can we have that in English, please, not some tard colonial Makaton?
You have dreams of being gaped by Null. You have a clownish pp🤡 .
You cry on forums and expect Kiwis to go along with your big plans. This is not resetera or the baseball team. Your little baby fit is funny and telling. I hope Null bans you or the mods mute you for upwards of 90 days so you have time to think about corking it. Zip it, bub.

I agree the political shit can get out of hand and I'll admit I've been guilty of it. On the other hand look at how insane politics has become. Its completely laughable and deserving of mockery, as are the people who die hard support either retarded party.

Guess its the same old thing like weens where everyone thinks they're hilarious and edgy except instead directed at lolcows its directed at political affiliations and ideology.

Every single time I try and talk politics it turns into a shitshow. I'll dip my toes into the water every few months, get bit and then decide it's a bad idea. Sure as shit though I try it again. I don't know what it is, everybody feels compelled to share their shitty personal politics with the world, most of all me. Nobody wants to hear it. Maybe someday I'll learn.

Until then I'll take my Maoi every couple months to keep me grounded.

No. I'm scared the lastest twist in society's absolutism will render something I say a reason not to employ me. Or cost me friends. Or blow back on my family or those who chose not to renounce me. Simply saying a man is a man; or pointing out the proven lies about covid vaccines could - if it blew up enough that there was even a minor online mob formation about it - render you unemployable in the public sector and academia alone. We live in a period of witch-hunting and moral purity spirals every bit as vicious as Salem in its day. Speak in favour of Trump online, your chances of getting a position at a University plummet. Large companies are massively risk averse when it comes to the slightest whisper of a Twitter storm. You can be the most qualified person on the planet, they're not going to hire you. Null, from what I've seen, is pretty tech savvy but is pretty much unemployable by any publicly traded company. I don't know if he keeps KiwiFarms up out of no other options or through a dogged persistence that would make Sisyphus blush - probably both. But you don't need to be close to Null levels of notoriety for this effect to kick in.

And yet, despite you massively missing the point about why people should be concerned about their public identity being known online, I actually agree with you within limits. Anonymity is important and needed in many cases. And I'd say the Farms is certainly one. But as it gets harder and harder to maintain that, people are being pushed to choose between it or simply not speaking at all. And of the two, I think a push back is coming where people have to start saying things openly and just not back down. They have to cultivate a "yeah, I said it, so what". There isn't really much choice anymore.

When you're surrounded by stupidity its very difficult not to comment on it.

So I joined tail end of 2019. IIRC, it was because the Articles section went members-only and I'd come to rely on it as one place I could get non-curated news. Glad I joined though because I love doing Secret Santas if nothing else.

Here's the thing though, I live almost entirely in Off-topic. I like this site because I can talk normally here and have interesting discussions and learn stuff. But I only get these things because of the willingness of the rest of the site to mercilessly mock lolcows, throw racial epithets about with wild abandon and basically act like it's the year 2000. They create a kind of 10' Circle of Protection Against Good in which I shelter.

If that shield is faltering - if people are no longer dissuaded from signing up because they either don't care or, it seems, are literally unaware of the stigma that will attach itself to them. Or if they are feeling edgy and see the Farms as a place they can be edgy, then some form of gatekeeping is a good idea. I personally would be totally fine with paying something if only there were a way for me to do so anonymously. I don't know that it's viable as a solution though.

The Farms is like one of the last lifeboats around the sinking wreck that was Web 1.0. More and more people are climbing aboard because it is simply one of the few which remains. And that could capsize it for all. So lets be blunt here: What each of us is looking for here is a way to ensure only "people like me" join the forum and each of us is trying to find a way to define that in such a way it will work.

I'm a parasite - I live mostly in Happenings and A&N - and I shelter behind the social unacceptability of the site's reputation to keep this a place I can actually have a conversation. It's a delicate balance. I might BE part of what is wrong with the site.
