Granted I don't know Virginia law, but generally you have to be notified you are tespassing by either signage or in advance by the owner.
You have to know you aren't allowed there. And actually you can get a small fine (or a civil action) for "simple" trespass, compared to the actual crime of defiant trespass, i.e. you saw the sign, ignored it, and went on in (without a legitimate purpose like you are a code inspector). However, unlawful intent can be inferred. For instance, if you went onto someone's property to throw eggs at their house, there is no way any reasonable person would believe that was legitimate, or be unaware that someone's front yard was part of their property.
I could see Ralph arguing that because he's fat, they obviously went onto his property to insult him with pork rinds, like you might insult a cop that way. Technically that's at least simple trespass because no, they didn't think he actually wanted this shit, and it wasn't a gift. In reality, the cops will just laugh.
Virginia's specific trespassing law does require a sign for it to be criminal:
law.lis.virginia.gov
https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title18.2/chapter5/section18.2-121/ <-- and here's a more specific intent variant that does not require a sign or notice
The second of those does require intent to damage the property or something more than entry. I doubt simply leaving a harmless object on the porch would qualify.
Incidentally, that's one Chris was prosecuted under for that game store he got kicked out of most recently.
