Pokémon (Not-So) Griefing Thread - Scarlet and Violet Released with 10 Million Copies in First 3 Days in Buggy States

My hope is they drop the "it's just like a real place" convention of later games. Alola/Hawaii was fine but that's it, every other one has been an annoying distraction. I'd place the one set in France as being the dividing line of when it started to become obnoxious.
What's funny is that they've been doing this while working hard to establish that the Pokémon World is not our world. I understand that it can be tricky to develop a modern-adjacent sci-fantasy setting, but the dartboard world building is getting weird and works better if you go all out.

The difficulty is about the same as the original, except it spikes up to “fuck you” levels at the end of the post-game
As someone who never played Gen 2, I kind of lost my shit as soon as I found out that there was actually an entire region to explore as opposed to just wondering around an small island.

But I never had any real trouble with the second set of gyms, though. Red is another story, but overall HG was an cut above what I was expecting for the series, at the time.

meh, every pokemon game on the switch so far has majorly disappointed me when it comes to graphics. they're a big step up from the ugliness that were the 3DS games, but i'd expect there to be at least some development and refinement from SWSH. they made BDSP chibi-esque but it's still ugly and the foggy-effect that they use to show depth looks horrendous. maybe i'm just nostalgic, but the 2D pixel graphics just looked much prettier and brighter. seems like GF love their 3d models though.

the new pokemon look marginally better than the absolute fucking car crash handful they added to LoA. violet's box legend is pretty and gives me cresselia vibes. hopefully they'll keep the meme-y names to a bare bare minimum though.

Lechonk and Smolive's meme sounding names are more of a coincidence than a direct attempt at a meme.

Lechonk is more likely a reference to the Spanish word for piglet (Lèchon) and Smolive is just a play on the words Small and Olive (you even hear it in the pronunciation).

And even then, these guys aren't the first pokemon to have dumb sounding names and they won't be the last.

I don’t think anyone cares enough about the country of Portugal.

I agree with your take, and I also understand using 3D for a franchise like Pokemon. You have 800+ Pokémon whose models get reused for more than just the core series.
There are ways to meet that aesthetic with the convenience of 3D, but they're so focused on efficiency while pushing this as a lifestyle brand that I doubt we'd get anything beyond a boutique spinoff done in pixels, or even a mashup like B&W/2 since that style has been making a comeback with some RPGs. Considering how nostalgia is a big moneymaker for them, I wonder if they've ever looked into it?

Alright time for my thoughts on the Scarlet/Violet trailer (I was expecting more info to drop but beggars can't be choosers)...
The overworld (that's actually open-world for once) looks beautiful compared to SwSh's Wild Area and its smaller routes and is on-par with PLA's open areas. There are still some nagging issues with smaller details like the emblems on the schools and some scenes that are a bit too bright but I can only hope that these are fixed in development. One thing that I found interesting (and oddly missing from Pokemon's Twitter posts) is that the games' official site mentions that you're free to explore the game without being bound by its story.

I'm not 100% sold on the multiplayer exploration and I find the lack of a more in-depth explanation regarding its uses to be somewhat worrying. My guess is that the multiplayer aspect will consist of both local and online wireless communications (with local multiplayer having a decent chance of allowing for multiple Switch profiles being used on one system), the latter of which will probably be better than SwSh's due to limiting the amount of connections and player models to just 4.

The non-playable characters look decent but the MC still looks awful (and I doubt that GF would change it at this stage in development), seeing player customization making a return helps the MC not like a creepy porcelain doll.
The expanded descriptions for the starters have only strengthened my decision to go with Fuecoco for my main version (I’m going for Scarlet but that could change depending on other factors like version exclusives), Quaxly for my side/foreign version, and Sprigatito will probably be obtained via a trade.

The Legendaries look interesting and their designs, along with the designs for the version-exclusive professors, seems to exude a "past-and-future" aesthetic. I can see where some people are coming from when they say that they don't look like Pokemon but you could say the same for several other Legendaries from past games. I also see that some people are comparing their designs to Digimon and monsters from Monster Hunter but they remind me of Toothless's design from Dreamworks's How to Train Your Dragon film series to me, especially when you get a good look at their faces. And yeah, Koraidon's tire-like throat looked a bit weird to me until I remembered that some lizards and amphibians that can puff up/fan out their throats when displaying.

Lechonk definitely feels like the name is just a few weeks away from feeling dated, but I'll be an optimist here and assume that it's just coincidental. The design is fairly basic (it's basically a truffle hog) so I hope that any potential evolutions fixes that, my personal wish is that it ends up looking more boar-like since the fuckers are well-known throughout Europe. It's too early to see any possible gameplay potential but it's worth noting that this is the first Pokemon to have Aroma Veil as a regular Ability and the first non-Fairy type to have it.

Pawmi is just another Pikaclone so there's not much to about it until more info is released. Like Lechonk it also comes packing a curveball Ability in the form of Natural Cure, which is usually seen on more "serene" Pokemon and Pokemon that can heal themselves. As far as design is concerned I had a bit of difficulty pinning it down but the whole cold climate bit makes me think of alpine marmots.

Smoliv is another Lechonk situation: it's a Pokemon that has a name that feels like it's a minute away from being dated and it's fairly basic as far as designs go (the latter of which sadly has been done with other early-game Grass types before).
As far as typing goes Grass/Normal feels mediocre but it’s not common, as far as functionality is concerned that type combination has only been done once before with the Sawsbuck line. The same is true for Early Bird, it’s a mediocre Ability but only a couple of Grass-type evolution lines have it (the Sunflora and Shiftry lines). But like all the others, we need to see more info if it’s worth putting these Pokemon into a team.

Oh, and Pokemon GO Fest is happening later today and tomorrow (it’s already happening in some parts of the world).

You do realize that using real-world regions have been a thing since the start of the game right? The Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh regions are based off of areas in Japan and IIRC the Orre region is based off of the southwest US.

After reading this tweet, I can't wait for the game to flop.

Well Go Fest 2022 seems to be going about as well as Go Tour: Johto did back in February. One of the big things that players are complaining about is the “boosted“ Shiny rate.

For those of you who don’t want to give the link a click, here’s a transcript.
Pokémon Go Fest, as well as other larger events in the game, tend to give players a lot of bonuses to entice them to go out and play for longer periods of time. This usually includes a boosted chance to encounter Shiny Pokémon, which is a big pull for many players in the community.

These odds are never disclosed, and Shiny hunting in any Pokémon game is not an exact science. However, throughout Go Fest 2022, players are widely reporting a lack of Shiny encounters across hours of playtime, when in previous years they would have likely encountered multiple within the span of an hour.

In multiple posts on Twitter, Reddit, and community forums, players noted that they have gone hours without a Shiny encounter while constantly playing the game. This includes multiple players reporting that they only encountered a single Shiny Pokémon after playing from 10am to 6pm local time in their region, the full time for day one of Go Fest.

One player from Denmark confirmed that they played all eight hours using Incense to boost encounters, but only encountered one Shiny. For comparison, they said that during Go Fest 2021, when a similar boost was advertised, they caught 24 using the same method.

Similar reports have been rampant in responses to official posts from the Pokémon Go Twitter or in community hubs, with many players saying this is the worst event they have taken part in, and some noting it was the first one they actively stopped participating in halfway through. Those comments are only made worse because most of those players purchased a $14.99 ticket to take part in the festivities.

Shinies aren’t the only thing players are complaining about, as reports of multiple bugs involving overworld encounters have also popped up. Niantic has even acknowledged that Pokémon attracted to Incense and Lures during the event are glitching, which has not pacified fans who are already dealing with problems.
As a fellow GO player (feel free to boo me for that) these people seem to forget that it’s finding a Shiny Pokémon even on boosted days like Community Days and events is a chance, not a guarantee. They just had shitty luck. That said, the general consensus on Silph Road is that Go Fest 2022’s rates are similar to last year’s: the first day’s boosted rates were at a 1/64 chance while the second day’s were at a 1/128 rate.

I remembered how the original GO Fest was, it was plagued with issues to the point that people were shouting for refunds, because they couldn't even play the game:

This year's GOFest was sub-par compared to the other years. But, people complaining about shiny rates never shut up about them since they solely focus on that alone and nothing else included in the event. In this case, the shiny rates were fine. I think the buggy, already nerfed incense on top of the server issues didn't help. Then again, all of the shiny rates will be horrible if every Pokemon you tap on is running away on the map itself thanks to the bug.

I found a single shiny but I didn't play the full duration of the event and I didn't catch like my llfe depended on it so whatever. I completed the research (choose relaxed because of what I mentioned earlier), completed the collection challenges and beyond raiding/catching axew I felt like it didn't have a lot going for it. Still happy with my shiny haxorus.
Second day was super whatever to me, other than nihilego's debut I couldn't give a rat ass about raids, in fact yesterday in terms of raids were also meh to me (besides axew). Wish they would have brought back exclusive moves for legendaries or a larger/better selection of pokemon (I am bored of seeing kyogre and groudon in raids, and they didn't even bring rayquaza this time). The ultra wormhole could have been a great excuse to bring back more legendaries to raids.
But oh well, at least it wasn't the go tour: johto, where they crammed everything into a single day, that fucking sucked.
8/10 it's ok

Edit: I wasn't even thinking about shiny hunting for this event, if anything shinies are a nice extra to me.
I don't know why there are so many people who feel they are entitled to a shiny, my best guess is that they haven't played a mainline game in over a decade or never did.

You'd be surprised, but that's true for the majority. It's the gambling aspect that makes them crazy for shiny Pokemon. It's a gacha experience without being a standard gacha on the surface.
Most of the people I have met that are into the series as a whole (console, mobile, anime, etc.) are more about building a living dex in GO.

Personally I am trying to complete the pokedex(es), but over the years I lost motivation due to how ridicolously limited the availability of some pokemon is.
A big reason why I buy these tickets is for the regionals, this year's Go fest thankfully featured no regionals that I can already find in my country.

Unrelated, but I like the new mega system and I am slowly increasing the mega level of my pokemon

Well I did the full two days that Go Fest was being held for, here are some highlights...
- The amount of Shinies I got on both days were roughly similar (11 on the first and 10 on the second) so I'm not too bothered by the apparently-low rate that people are complaining about. I know some people were expecting rates on-par with or better than a standard Community day but that's just pure lunacy, if anything it should be between the permaboost rate (~1/64) that some rarer Pokemon have and the standard Community Day rate (~1/25) to at least make it worthwhile.

- The kinds of Pokémon you could Shiny hunt were a bit lackluster, there were only four new ones while others had been dropped during earlier events. It would've been nice, in addition to making them available outside of their specific regions, if Niantic also dropped Torkoal's and Tropius's Shinies during Go Fest.

- I can agree with the issue regarding Incense-spawned Pokemon running away when tapped on the map, it probably has to do with server issues and Niantic "returning" the spawn rate to what it was when COVID lockdowns were in effect. I’ve also noticed that, both before and after the event, sometimes a Pokémon I’ve caught will “respawn” on the map and immediately run away when I tap ‘em, I’m not sure if it’s the same issue but it‘s still weird.
- The 5-star raids for the first day were really lackluster, Groudon and Kyogre were available a few days before the event and that kind of killed the desire for some people to raid (not that this affected much TBH, I still saw people filling up lobbies where I was raiding). Day 2 was surprising due to how few people it'd take to KO Nihilego, I'd join raid lobbies with only 4 players and we'd still take out that glass jellyfish. If this is an indication of the kinds of challenges Ultra Beasts will bring to Go then I'm all for it, Legendary raids can be a pain if you're not a part of a large group.

- The lack of lowered Egg hatching distances made some parts of the event annoying, especially on the 2nd day when hatching Eggs was needed for two challenges found in the UB-centric Special Research. And yes, I know that said Special Research could be completed at any time.
And now we have two events, Adventure Week and a Pokémon TCG Crossover Event, coming up.

Adventure Week will start on later today (or now if in other parts of the world) and end on the 12th, here are the specs…
- Amaura and Tyrunt are introduced to the game.

- Unown F will be appearing in 1-star Raids and has a chance of being Shiny.

- 1-Star raids (Both regular and Alolan Geodudes, Sudowoodo, Roggenrola, and the previously mentioned Unown), 3-Star raids (Rhydon, Shuckle, Tyranitar, and Aggron), and 5-Star raids (Groudon), and Mega Raids (Aerodactyl)

- Event-themed research will be available and players can get 3 free Incubators (probably those cheap regular 1-use ones)

- Research Day on the 12th (from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM local time): limited research tasks will be available where you can get Cranidos and Shieldon and have a higher chance of getting Shiny versions 'em. Tyrunt and Amaura will also appear in the wild in greater numbers during this event.

- Wild Pokémon include Graveler, Rhyhorn, the Kanto Fossil ‘mons, Larvitar and Pupitar, Aron, the Hoenn Fossil ‘mons, and the Sinnoh Fossil ‘mons throughout the event.

- Shuckle, Slugma, Cranidos, Shieldon, Archen, Tirtouga, Tyrunt, and Amaura will be available in 7km Eggs. Hatch distances will be halved during the event.

- Archen’s and Tirtouga‘s Shiny forms are available during the event and will continue to be available if encountered after the event ends.
The next event is the Pokémon TCG Crossover event, which is being done to advertise the GO-themed TCG set being released in on July 1st, it starts on the 16th of June and ends on the 30th. Here are the specs for that one…
- Wimpod, Golisopod, and another Costume Pikachu will be released. The Pikachu will be wearing a TCG-themed cap (it’s basically a reskin of the Thunderbolt Project Hat Pikachu but the hat’s colored blue and the two-thunderbolts-in-a-circle design is replaced with two TCG cards) and has the chance of being Shiny. Wimpod evolves in the same way as Magikarp, Meltan, and Stufful do: you’ll have to use 400 Wimpod Candies to get Golisopod.

- Meltan’s Shiny form will be available to players that have the Mystery Box (and presumably any Special Research tasks if you’re sitting on ’em). The cooldown timer will also be reduced.

-Six Collection Challenges will be available during the event with each being a different difficulty level. Completing them all will get you XP, a Lure Module, an Incubator, and Pokémon encounters (consisting of Venusaur, Blastoise, Charizard, and Meltan). Three more Challenges will become available on the 23rd and will also yield encounters with the fully-evolved Kanto Starters.

- Wild Pokemon include Bulbasaur & Ivysaur, Charmander & Charmeleon, Squirtle & Wartortle, Alolan Rattata, the previously-mentioned Costume Pikachu, Slowpoke, Magikarp, Eevee, Spinarak, Natu, Aipom, Numel, Bidoof, Pidove, and Wimpod. Rare Pokémon include Onix, Chansey, Snorlax, Dragonite, and Slaking.

- Solrock and Lunatone will appear worldwide during the event, after the event end the Pokemon will swap hemispheres

- Ivysaur, Charmeleon, Wartortle, the previously-mentioned Costume Pikachu, and Wimpod will be available in Field Research tasks. Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Snorlax, Dragonite, and Slaking will also be available in tasks.

- Chansey, Larvitar, Timburr, and Wimpod will be available in 1-Star raids. Alolan Exeggutor, Snorlax, Dragonite, and Slaking will be available in 3-Star Raids. Mewtwo will be available in 5-Star Raids. The Kanto Starters will be available in Mega Raids.
Both events look interesting to me but Adventure Week feels like it’ll be the one I‘ll go all-in on. I need me a good Tyrunt. And Shiny Archen, I’ve gotten one in each main game since Gen 5 and I sure as FUCK will try to get one here.

For me I’m mostly into semi-casual collecting, I don’t need to complete my Dex (living or otherwise) on Go but I like the thrill of the hunt.

If the Legendaries are meant to be Past and Future I hope their Types are

Dragon/Fire for the Past
Dragon/Psychic for the Future.

Those types are fitting and neither type combos have been used much.
I think Scarlet's gonna be Fire/Water and Violets gonna be Electric/Steel. Scarlet's gotta have webbed feet for a reason I think, and Violet has jagged lines reminiscent of designs of other electric types.

Every region is based off of a real world location in some capacity tho, except maybe the regions from the Ranger games. Orre was even based on Arizona way before Unova was based on New York

Yeah, bit there's still a definite shift between DP and earlier games (based in japan, and thus largely either grounded in basic and near-universal terms of their design or completely disconnected from reality) and Unova and later games (based in other areas, and thus emphasise their differences from Japan). It's part of why characters like Kabu are often joked about larping as if their super-classical-stylings are ubiquitous throughout their region, when Hoenn is just... not like that.

Probably the closest in Gen 1-4 is Ecruteak city with the two Towers in Johto.
