Linus Tech Tips is making a data storage server for Dream, containing over a hundred terabytes of SSDs and a petabyte of mechanical drives. I don't know any reason why he would need this much storage for anything, since the most likely reason, archiving VODs and video recordings, would take a fraction of this given how little he streams and uploads. For comparison, LTT has their own storage setup in the petabytes, but they're storing raw 8K RED footage, upload daily, and have been on YouTube longer than Dream. (YouTube)

It's worth pointing out that when LTT does these kinds of server builds for themselves, they're usually sponsored by the companies that provide the drives/servers. They've also done other storage server builds for YouTubers such as the Slow Mo Guys and Smarter Every Day, but those are 10% the size of this one and are only HDDs. I don't know if this is sponsored or if Dream paid for it.

Seagate has improved in recent years (still not as good as WD), but I don't know how they're gonna get this shipped from Vancouver to Florida without ruining any drives. They already dropped one in the video.

It seems like he's only planning to use this for storing videos and VODs, and it'll also be used by George and Sapnap when (or if) they move in with Dream for the same purpose. I think it would take them a full decade to come anywhere close to filling it up (for comparison, it took LTT two years to fill up their petabyte storage server with raw 8K RED footage for daily uploads). He's pretty much just going all-out because he can, fair enough.

But if he's just going to be archiving, then the SSD server is pointless, having the same function with less storage space at a greater price. Dream paid for and was clearly expecting the petabyte of mechanical drives, but why did the SSD company sponsor this video with free drives if Linus is just going to give them to someone else? LTT has a SSD server for multiple people editing videos over a network. Dream just sends his footage to be edited by some third-party freelancer on Twitter. Are they also going to be living with him?

I still think it's fun to watch the stans pretend to be excited because it's Dream when they have no idea what they're looking at. They don't know the first thing about technology outside of Apple products.
