On guns:
For sidearms I’d probably go with a Glock 17 or 19. They’re reasonably priced, readily available everywhere, easy to maintain, utterly reliable, and almost every aftermarket part is designed with them in mind. Just consider replacing the iron sights. The stock ones aren’t great unless you get lucky and get one where they put their night sights on it.
For shotguns… most any pump should be fine. Older Remington 870s (their qc apparently went to shit at some point) or one of the many Mossberg 500 variations are a good bet.
For a rifle any AR platform from a reputable company is fine. Smith & Wesson’s are fine. So are Ruger’s. Springfields are a little more expensive but are also a little nicer stock. You can also change out the upper if you want something different than 556.
Guncow here.
I agree 100% with what he is saying.
If you need more concealability than a Glock 19, or live in a ban state, go look at the Glock 26 or the Glock 48 (and 43x). The 26 is smaller than a 19 and holds a 10rd mag instead of 15-17. It’s fat and short and can take the 15,17, and 33 round ubiquitous double stack Glock magazine. The 48 is basically a bifurcated Glock 19. Meaning it’s a skinny single stack that fits perfectly onto the 19’s profile, the 43x is a shorter barrel version of the 48 for additional concealability. But the slightly longer 48 does offer a bit more velocity imparted onto the bullet, and a longer sight radius which helps fast aiming.
Don’t fuck around with other handguns or glocks in other calibers than 9mm. You’ll end up spending a lot more on nonstandard mags, holsters, and other accessories. Keep the glocks mostly stock. There are catalogs full of bubba redneck Jc Whitney type of parts meant to “improve” glocks. Fuck that shit. They run great from the factory or with a bit of break-in wear. Throw some night sights or fibre optic sights on it, buff the trigger bar a little bit, put in the 3.5# connector and call it a day. Spend the money saved on ammo and shoot the shit out of it. The damn things like being ridden dry and dirty. They are not really remarkable but they are lovable companions that are always ready for you.
Oh and the trigger is better than you think it is…..you’ll learn to appreciate that statement the longer you own a Glock, hint: look up “shooting from reset”
