The Elder Scrolls

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
1. The game crashes all the time. This can be the issue with memory leak as it runs out of control and as Oblivion was not optimized for modern hardware, it is a pain in the ass. Trying to find fixes for it, but so far, no luck, as this mod is not super well known.
You can't just use the fixes people use for regular Oblivion? Though tbf I've done all that and it still crashes sometimes (ex. occasionally when I equip a piece of armor or load into a new cell) Same with the UI, though I wouldn't recommend darnified because that makes everything way too fucking small

I have been playing Nehrim, the total converstion mod for Oblivion and I notice some issue.

2. the UI. I may haven been spolied by more modern hardware, but good god, is the UI for Oblivion clunky as shit.
otherwise, the mod is very impressive. For a mod that came out in 2010, it is very ambious. to say the least.
If you get the chance, try out Enderal. Its made by the same people and its for Skyrim.

For those with an Xbox Series X or S, it should be noted that Morrowind and Oblivion are pretty much locked at 60fps on those consoles. The former had an uncapped framerate when it released on the original Xbox, so these consoles are powerful enough to keep it at 60fps consistently. The latter got patched to run at 60fps, along with Fallout 3 & New Vegas, and it too is a smooth experience.

Combined with much shorter load times, and it's the next best option to playing them on PC with mod support.

Oblivion is the most unstable of the modern TES games so there isn't too much that you can do. I'm guessing you have 4gb patch, so maybe try one of the mesh optimization mods that are floating around and see if that helps. Nehrim uses a lot of vanilla assets so the changes should also be applied there if you install them correctly. Unfortunately, Nehrim is also packed with many of those assets in smaller spaces, quickly leading to crashes more often than even playing Oblivion normally. As for the UI, Darnified is outdone by other mods you can find outside Nexus. There was a nice I found on a Russian blog but I would have to go find the link again. Still worse than Morrowind's or Skyrim's (modded) UI though.

Is it worth going back to older TES games after starting with Skyrim? I feel like I'll be annoyed by QOL issues and even more jank. Is Oblivion objectively fun or only something you can enjoy if you played it at the time?
I played Oblivion after Skyrim, and it was very fun. You only need to do a little adjusting to be able to play both well.

I finally finished a big ass modlist in Skyrim SE.
Patched personally some inconsistencies between mods in a lapse of 3 days.
Hopefully the problems are more lower than before.

Oblivion's Anvil compared to Project Tamriel's Anvil

I wonder if this shit's ever gonna come out.
Whenever there's a massive bottleneck in TR or PT content progress it's always because of questing, in the case of Anvil it takes forever for volunteers to write every last bit of new dialogue in the huge city. It's not like a game studio where you're paid to sit there 9-5 and crunch content.

Making a quest that has more than three Journal entries takes me longer than building a new town with 75+ people in it with unique dialogue and visual story telling, I fucking hate the journal system

Daggerfall Unity is up on GOG (for a limited time?)

Comes with a good set of mods pre-installed.
Interesting the Gavin Clayton (DFU's creator) hasn't even retweeted this. I wonder if they needed to talk to Bethesda about this? I know they mentioned DFU in the changelog of the latest Daggerfall Steam update, so maybe he helped them out with that? The GOG cut has a good list of mods, but I'd recommend disabling DREAM and Roleplay and Realism your first playthrough. Most of them are just visual mods.

I'm glad Daggerfall and DFU are getting the attention they deserve. I've followed the DFU project since the beginning and it's truly amazing how they've modernized (and in a sense, finished) this masterpiece of a game.

Unless Bethesda changed, Daggerfall isn't actually freeware, just free if you bought another in the series.

As for the game itself, how much of change is it playability-wise from Morrowind? I watched that retrospective that's getting pushed Youtube and it's got me interested.

No it's freeware, you can go to Bethesda's Official Website and download it, plus it's free on Steam too. Don't gotta pay shit.

I did the same. Yeah Oblivion and Skyrim are extremely similar, it is a very very small adjustment going from one to the other
The leveling system is closer to Morrowind's than Skyrim's but other than that and graphics they are pretty simular.

It's quite different from Morrowind, Daggerfall is probably more different from Morrowind than Morrowind is from Skyrim. If you're interested in playing it it's still worth a shot though.
