President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Lol not helping your case of actually being Neolib groomer that just pretends to be nationalist cause its trendy for the short moment.
He probably posted this, it's their biggest wish to be a cuck for Ukraine:

The UK is sending its first long-range missiles to Ukraine, the defence secretary has said, despite a threat from Russia to the West.
Ben Wallace said the M270 multiple-launch rocket system will help Ukraine defend itself against Russia.
The government has not confirmed how many weapons will be sent, but the BBC understands it will be three initially.
The decision comes after the US announced last week it was also supplying a rocket system.

Unfortunately we don't have any of the cluster warhead equipped rockets so no grid square removal, guess they'll just have to make do with dropping 200lb precision warheads on Russkies tens of kilometers away instead.

The name of the game for artillery is to lob a bunch of shells and then quickly fuck off. There is a RF vid where they lob a rocket and response arrives not a minute later. I know that US has very sophisticated artillery radar systems that can triangulate where a shell is coming from before it even hits the ground. This requires acquisition of several data points, crunching some numbers and passing those coords to another battery.

I know that UAF has some form of artillery calculators since 2014, but I'm curious if anyone came across a good analysis on what both sides are using. There were photos of RF fire coordinator, literally using a compass, paper and a pencil.

but I'm curious if anyone came across a good analysis on what both sides are using.
From what I understand native Ukrainian capability in this area is basically non existant. They're almost entirely reliant on a relatively small handful of AN/TPQ-36s donated by the US and Netherlands. The problem here is twofold
1)Serious lack of numbers. I've seen estimates of 20-30 ish delivered which is fucking nothing at this scale of combat.
2)Lack of range. They only have an effective range of 11-15 miles, which is not great when you're lookinat at regular artillery hitting at beyond that range, let alone shit like RAPs.

I've also seen rumours/stories about Britain and Germany delivering more systems, but no firm details on amounts/systems delivered, and given Germany's reticence to do fucking anything I doubt if they ever arrived.

The US sent around 20 of AN/TPQ-36 counter battery radars and the UK sent their equivalent system. The Russians must not have much for counter battery acquisition, otherwise most of the M777s would have been shelled into oblivion by now. Not exactly a shoot and scoot system.

That's the range for detecting an incoming round, not the range for calculating where the round came from. If a hostile round gets within 10 miles of the radar it will generally have the location of the hostile battery fixed before the round hits the ground.

It looks like Russia is losing just as much as she's gaining.

Yep. It's WW1 again, alright.

Also known as: the war that went so badly for Russia, they surrendered Poland to Germany and had a civil war of their own.

I was told by an old (Soviet) military guy that Israel did a similar thing during the seven day war. Not as fast of a response but still effective because the opposing side didn't feel like moving their artillery like they were told to do (which pissed off the Sovs).

They are still far better than any Soviet made guns and I believe are much lighter too. From POW vids, seems like UAF have their shit together and other sources say that UAF artillery school is pretty good. Not sure how much of it is due to NATO training. Over 8 years they had plenty of crews trained I bet, even though anything over 150mm was expressly forbidden by Minsk, artillery did play a role.

The French says that 18 Cesars destroyed 70 of RF artillery. Regardless how accurate that is, training crews isn't trivial so replacements are tough to come by.

One thing that RF has going for it is seemingly inexhaustible supply of ammo/shells. All the soviet stockpiles are fucking mind boggling in size.

I also remember some years back, UAF stockpile of large caliber shells went up in smoke. At that point in time when no one thought about full on invasion it didn't seem like a big deal, but looking back, it absolutely was and I bet it was just one way RF was undermining and prepping. Large invasion plans take years to plan.

I'm pretty sure best artillery schools in USSR were on the territory of Ukraine, not sure what's left of it, but I've been told that Sumy continues the tradition with its Sumy Higher Artillery Command School to this day, it's rather famous.
Also seen claims that it takes just few days if not hours for Ukrainians to learn how to use new artillery pieces "because it's not that complicated".

At least they make good use of what they get, I suppose?

sheeit, so two RF generals in a short span.

Apparently these two served together as well, one was second in command and frequently was acting when the other was away.

Two more Russian generals have been killed in Ukraine, reports say, adding to the string of senior military casualties suffered by the Kremlin.
The senior commanders were killed during heavy fighting on Sunday in eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces have been stepping up assaults on the key city Sievierodonetsk, in the Donbas region.
Russian state television said that Major-General Roman Kutuzov was killed in eastern Ukraine, reports the Reuters news agency.

The report did not provide more details and the Russian army did comment.
Unconfirmed reports on social media also said another top Russian officer, Lieutenant-General Roman Berdnikov, commander of the 29th Army, died on Saturday.
Russia officially lists military deaths as state secrets even in times of peace and has not updated its official casualty figures in Ukraine since March 25, when it said that 1351 Russian soldiers had been killed since the start of the Ukraine invasion on February 24.

Last month it was reported US intelligence was helping the Ukraine military kill Russian generals in the war.
Citing unnamed senior officials, the New York Times claimed US intelligence have detected the whereabouts of several battlefield headquarters where Russian generals were based.
That information was then shared with Ukrainian units, who used artillery and other targeted strikes to kill the senior Russian officers.
The US also provided vital information on the location of Russia's Black Sea flagship the Moskva, which was struck and sunk by Ukraine in April.

Pffffft I had no idea they even gave medals for participation in military parades, that's so fucking gay

Some nobody on Twitter claims that his car was caught in Ukrainian ambush:

I'll continue digging for something more... credible
The source of the rumor is this post from the member of the State Duma Dmitry Sablin: https://t.me/DV_Sablin/593, where he talks about losing his friend "warrior" "Roman"

Vatnik-central rusvesna.su refers to it while talking about death of talented high-ranking general whose identity they "don't have the right" to disclose, but mention that he was responsible for some shit in Syria: https://rusvesna.su/news/1654432834

I don't see why they would be spreading a false rumor like this, so I'd say it's quite likely to be true. And it happened yesterday, June 5th.

At this point, future Russian generals would be confused officers promoted on the spot rather quickly to fill the gaps. Which means they'll keep dying.

I haven't seen a modern western country lose so many generals. If this is how their army operates, I can only imagine how bad India and China's armies are.

For a Polish man, he's surprisingly receptive and supportive of his people's number one enemy.

And this idiot sells himself as a Pole. If his people find out how supportive he is of Russia, they'd have him hung, drawn, and quartered.
He's as Polish as I am Native American. He's a typical right-wing grifter with little understanding of what's going on on the continent he claims to originate from.

Well thats one way to ensure your forces fight harder since enemy will not take prisoners. Catch 22 Either Ukies start executing and Ruskie are forced to fight harder or Ukrainian morale takes hit as Russians commit atrocities and they are forced to hold to Geneva. Mhhhh ruthless move.
