If you were in Hell, would you know you were there?

They say people in Hell aren't even aware that they're in it. Hell may not be the fire and brimstone type of place that its portrayed. It may be far less obvious. But if so, how would you know?

Just read The Great Divorce. It's a short book, and even though the author emphasizes that it's 100% fiction, it'll answer all your questions about heaven and hell.

Yeah, I think I'd know it. I have dreams a lot where I'm in hell, and I always realize it in those situations.

I've always felt you wouldn't, life just wouldn't work out but there would be enough to give hope. I do think it's possible that the world ended in 2012 and we're all actually in hell, or at least some of us and the others are based on our memories.

I doubt traditional torture would work very well at all, people would either break quickly or develop a tolerance.

Ages ago some Christian told me that hell is not fire & brimstone type of deal, but a place with the absence of God. That would kinda explain everything going on, if we are in there right now.
maybe i'd prefer the fire
I've heard that there isn't a hell. It's just that when evil people die they don't get to experience paradise. Right now, we are on a fallen planet, where Satan is running things, that's why it sucks so much, why bad things happen to good people, etc. But when God returns, he's gonna fuck Satan up and Earth is going to become paradise, and that's where we get to live, work, play, on a perfect planet with no evil in it. We aren't gonna go to heaven though, only a few thousand will go to heaven and be with God, those are going to be humanity's representatives. The rest of us will live on paradise Earth.

And no hope...
You're reminding me of a sermon that my former Pastor gave about Hell and it included no hope.

I was told that Earth is Satan's dominion, hence all our suffering/diseases.

Assuming a hell exist, it's defined as the worst place imaginable. I'd say it depends on the person whether being aware they're in hell is more hellish, or not being aware that causes more suffering.

The cultural view of hell has changed a lot through the ages.
The Jews believed in Sheol, a dark and bleak place devoid of light and hope, very similar and probably influenced by the Greek concept of Tartarus.
In catholic culture, it also changed a lot. In the middle ages, the concept of "purgatory" was getting traction, it was and is seen as a place where the sinners get purified in flame, to then get free of their sins. The main point was not punishment, but cleansing, although in a very painful way.
Dante's Divina Comedia had a big influence in the renaissance, and it does until now.
The Devil as ruler of hell, and him being the same as the Angel Lucifer that appears in the old testament as an angel that is sent by god to torture and destroy, was also not there from the beginning.

Really, countless dissertations have been written on the topic, and I find it fascinating.
