YouTube Historians/HistoryTube/PopHistory

been watching someone named The Shogunate who covers the sengoku period of japans history. i find sengoku period to be such a cool moment in japans history. it dosent last very long but there so many iconic characters that show up as soon as they leave and leave their mark in the history books. its like the wildwest but with samurais in a RTS map with a bunch of players from different factions.

its pretty crazy how such a small country can have so much infighting going on for hundred of years, it basically becomes part of daily life. the samurai were fucking hardcore .

The Ashigaru deserve more attention. While the Samurai were badass, they quite often had the luxury of enough time to train and prepare for the next conflict. Ashigaru were just Average Joes who had to leave their home and family behind to be send to one of countless battlefields. Then you had people who went from being some unimportant conscripted peasent to renowned warriors, with the best example being Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Honestly the Sengoku Jidai is overrated. It's the best known but it overshadows other cool things like the campaigns against the northern barbarians or the pre-historic mythical period with shaman-queen himiko and the eternal debate if japan was settled by koreans or koreans by japanese.

All people seem to known is Sneedgoku jidai - some shogunate - Meiji Revolution - japan makes asia its bitch - WORLD WAR II.
Japan is more than that. It's most distinctive structures; the Kofun are a total mystery and nobody seems to care ;_;. Imagine having prehistoric royal tombs in your country and the royal household is "sorry no can open"

Certain financial power players shifted American views on the war to be pro-Entente because that was where their money had went.
That and Germany did attack American shipping and sending a telegram asking a country to attack another country tends to sour your relationship with the latter. Of course, the British did have a hand in pushing America to get involved in the First World War but the thing is that the UK and the US already had a pretty good relationship at this point and Germany was seen by many Americans at the time as a bit too aggressive and authoritarian for their liking and would probably clash with the United States at some point in the future.

To be fair, we don't know much about ancient Japan simply due to the fact that there isn't much to go off of in terms of writing and what we do have is mostly seen as mythical by most historians. It's mostly down to the fact that most times the more interesting aspects of a nation's history tend to stick in the public conscious. I'm not saying ancient Japan wasn't interesting, it's just we don't know much about it for it to be well-known. Popular History is odd like that.

I don't know if someone has mentioned this youtube channel on this thread before but Apostolic Majesty is probably one of the few History channels out there that aren't as spergy as the rest of HistoryTube. His videos (podcast) normally pass the 3 hour mark so specific topics get an in-depth analysis that you don't normally get from your average History documentary. There's also Justine Brown who focuses more on English medieval history and the American colonial period.

The Federalist Papers addressed that for that very reason. It didn't want a big state influencing a small state.

In fact it matters more than before. In the past it was a majority English people with a small number of French and Dutch with far less political cleavages. It was only agrarian vs urban, anglican vs catholic vs reformed at the time. No real other divisions. Nowadays we have a large black population, a hispanic population, a native american population, many religions, urban and rural and suburban, all competing with their own interests. The idea of a Senate works best for that. America isn't homogenous or small enough to just have no proportional system like a Senate or EC.
Tbf the Anglo-Americans were split into 4 different cultures that only grudgingly allied with each other because the Hanoverian court was stepping on snek. A lot of early colonies were just chartered companies getting all their people from a single region & subculture, and of course you would only join a colony whose laws are acceptable to you. It's a similar feedback loop to internet echo chambers like Resetera, complete with people getting banned for not fitting in.

I see this idea of a Land Value Tax to be a disaster in waiting, but that's my opinion. What do y'all think?

I haven't watched the video, but as a Chinese Nationalist simp from a pretty libertarian viewpoint, I think Georgism actually isn't that disastrous if some issues can be ironed out. There are inconsistencies which I don't know how to reconcile, but I do agree with Georgism that is leads to less inefficiencies in most situations than income taxation or the like. Income taxation is a plague on our economy by giving the government too much to spend and should be by all standards immoral as it bypasses the very reason wage labor isn't exploitative by simply having the government steal the fruits of your labor itself.

The problems that come with Georgism is the potential for the government to still step in and busybodying control over land. It may lead to nasty outcomes like mines being nationalized and the like. If these can be prevented, the revenue coming in will be good in my opinion. It won't be too high, but that's a good thing. One reason so many governments are so corrupt is they have too much money (But still not enough to cover pyramid schemes like social security) thanks to various forms taxation which produce distortions in all aspects of the economy except for being a vampire to the populace which it's hyperefficient at.

I don't think Georgism can work spectacularly but I don't think taxation usually works out well anyways. Every system has its issues, some worse (income taxation) than others.

This is cool and all but I'm still not going to think taxation is good.

You shall own nothing! Realistically, this would be an unmitigated disaster due to how abusive governments have become in terms of taxation and property rights. Generally, such a tax would hit mostly the small fish, like family farms, and petty landlords. Also, how would you tax corporations, especially IT ones? Their whole revenue is based on intangible services which can be far greater in value than the land that their servers and infrastructure occupy.

Funnily, such a system partially exists in China, where the regional governments own all urban land and you "lease" the land for 99 years. However, all rural property and land goes by father to son.

According to Georgism corporations would only be taxed for the land their utilities are based on, and any capital gains and profit won't be taxed. So IT or internet based companies wouldn't be taxed. However I don't get where the idea that taxing companies' produced wealth stops them from being overbearing and powerful. It doesn't, it just makes them find ways to be shadier and more corrupt if anything while also distorting prices and supply and demand in the economy. Don't want to sound like a lolbert here, but perhaps the reason Governments have such overblown budgets is because they are so flush with revenue anyways. If the US only were allowed to pass 2 trillion dollar budgets instead of 4, things would be less bloated and corrupt.

According to Georgism anything you produce on the land and the wealth it further produces you own outright and the Government cannot take it from you. The problem with Georgism is as you said the government's potential to overstep its boundaries when it comes to land, which alone kills the system's viability. Give the government an inch and it will go a mile to be as obtuse and corrupt as possible.

Well, since you have a engaged into a very large array of issues, I will have to do the same. In a modern world, a government will inevitably have to run a large budget to ensure the smooth functioning of society. So the government has to find money, it is better for corporations to be taxed heavily rather than ordinary people who already struggle to live respectably. Additionally, it is better for the state's apparatus to hunt corporations rather than focus on ordinary people. Corporations will find a way to screw you up even if you do not tax them at all, by reducing standards, etc. So to repeat, it is more beneficial to society for the government to focus its energies on hunting malicious corporations which can seriously harm the public with their actions rather than to go over your average Joe, who may undereport a few hundred dollars.

Now a major problem here is the massive trashcan that the US has devolved into. A nation plagued by extremely powerful lobbyists, corporate interests, ridiculously bloated institutions, inneficient bureaucracies, and a short-sighed impotent political elite that is currently consuming itself. There is no solution to this problems, within a few decades that nation will be plunged into social and economic chaos. Europe did a few things better, but it suffers as well from corrupt short-sighted political elites, and the European Union has devolved into a bureaucratic nightmare. Anyway, this is beyond the scope of what was discussed before, but I felt obliged to answer.

I'm probably going to sound like an idiot here, but how is this any different than property tax that anybody who owns land in the United States pays? The only difference I see is if you have land with "something productive" on it, say a farm, you don't pay the property tax? Georgism, at least from Mr. Beat's vid and all your comments, sounds like a call to abolish taxes except property taxes and only in situations where the land is being used for "something productive". A sort of land-based lazy tax if you will.

I can already see the horror of people and governments trying to define "something productive" in a Georgist system. I'm all open to new ideas and ways of thinking, but I think Georgism feels a little half-baked until I get a better explanation.

The King's and General's dude is pretty strange.

Turkish extremist

Whatifalthist, also known as Rudyard Lynch (because he was dumb enough to dox himself for attention), is AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

...Sorry, that was just my wish for him to actually put effort into his content, furiously trying to make itself known.

Does he deserve his following? Well, he says he does (he did that, when he wasn't asking for work in his video), but he LOST a debate with Vaush by being a worse arguer than I am, and by agreeing to do the debate in the first place.

He's in a weird position for autists such as myself; he says things that are interesting, and in an addicting manner that grabs attention, but even two minutes of watching his content will reveal that he doesn't care about his own stuff even a hundredth as much as his audience. Given his kinda-milquetoast stance usually, and his own claims that no one else cares about what he's covering, the audience is trapped into watching him.

He also shills for something called Pearl, sort of a Discord or Twitter alternative, because one of the people he sleeps with made it.

Gosh, he really thinks he's important, despite how little effort he puts into anything... or maybe he's putting as much effort into everything as possible, and he's just that incompetent.

The Kings and Generals guy is this Turkish fella?
I mean, as posted earlier in this thread, On Kings and General's YouTube page, Channels -> Subscriptions, they are full off Breadtubers, so being a strange extremist Turk fits (far left, establishment shill [he got a sponsorship from Intel for Allah's sake], and likes getting asspats for being from an Islamic country). It's all so tiresome...

Rudy is a major sperg, but he is such an unapologetic dweeb with his heart/mind in the right place (aka I sympathize with him trying to be a center-right classical liberal in current year on YouTube as a zoomer for crying out loud). I think he has potential to be a good/fun YouTuber. However, he's shifting towards right-wing grifting and tech bros, which is also making his ego balloon, which can easily turn him into a lolcow (if he isn't already). His video efforts are quite low, which was charming and reminded me of old "authentic" YouTube, but he's said he has a team working in New York with him, which is definitely confusing.

I guess me, and much of this thread, root for Rudy, but still watches because he's teetering on the edge of lolcowdom. Historytube is either him or Breadtube/Breadtube-adjacent fucks...

If I recall, Kings and General's used to be called "Nurrix and Phoenix" and was mostly a Total War channel. The creator of the channel did have a noticeable Balkan/Middle Eastern accent from what I remember. Probably lives in an apartment in Berlin like most Balkan and Middle Eastern Socialists and Nationalists.

Speaking of Balkan Nationalists/Socialists that are engaged in history, I think this fella hasn't been talked about her. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Mr. Balkan Odyssey. Now BO here is your typical Serbian Nationalist turned Marxist and borderline Yugoslavia simp. He's also a BreadTuber but I'll focus on his "history" videos in this thread.

Now as he is a Serb, plenty of his "history" videos are dedicated to Serbian history and by that it's mostly involves the 90s. Although he does have some mapping videos on medieval Serbia which are pretty decent, so I'll give him a pass there. It's when he does commentary videos later on is when the Yugoslav simping starts. He pretty much has a big nostalgia boner for Yugoslavia and thinks that it would've survived had it not been for the "big bad Westerners" and shit talks NATO for doing war crimes during the Yugoslav wars ignoring how Serbians were just as guilty, if not more, of war criminality. He also thinks that Yugoslavia joining the EU would've saved it from collapsing for some reason.

He thinks the unifying of Germany and Italy is comparable to the unifying of Yugoslavia, which is a stretch of interpretation at best.
