I think the "real sugar" claim is just pointing out that the soda uses cane sugar instead of corn syrup. I'm not sure if you're American, but high fructose corn syrup is absolutely ubiquitous here because of the corn lobby. It's in everything, from bread to yogurt to soda. It really does taste different than cane sugar, and because its main component, fructose, is metabolized differently than sucrose or glucose, it has been implicated as a contributing factor for health conditions including obesity, the metabolic syndrome, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Consequently, some people actively seek out "real sugar" products. Until the last decade or so, it was really difficult to find soda sweetened with real sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup in the United States. If you've heard people raving about "Mexican Coke", this is why.

They do not! I don't know what it's like on the medical side of things, but on the flipside I can confirm there are a lot of people out there who view their doctors as something that is "assigned" to them (kind of like how public schools work in the United States where the school you attend is based on where your house is located). This is because your insurance will usually "help you" find a doctor when you get new insurance, and once you're in whatever system it is, you're kind of stuck.

Not sure (it's somewhere in this thread I posted it) if you saw it but Dani's parents run a real estate business, for awhile dani was listed as a secretary on their website. they give her everything, she's never had a real job I'm pretty sure they just pay her to pay her. She had a congenitally malformed lower face/jaw, and underwent some intense surgery to at least get her looking like she does now. The piggy nose was always there, IIRC, and nothing was done about it. It may have been something that she and her doctors decided to leave for future surgeries, given the extent of the work that was already being done, but she's never gone back for more.

I don't have her "before" pic, but it may be buried way back in her Insta feed. She definitely got a shitty roll of the genetic dice, and I've no doubt it was hard to deal with while growing up. As with Russell Greer's Moebius syndrome, I can't slag on her looks because she's just fucking unlucky in that department. God's kind of a dick like that, sometimes.

I actually did not know this and I'm horrified. That's absolute garbage. We wonder why there's a childhood obesity crisis in the United States. I'd venture a guess that it has something to do with the fact that we encourage our infants to develop a taste for corn syrup. I'm not one of those breastfeeding fascists and I think the La Leche League have done real harm to women, but come on. There has to be a better way than this.

Also, just a reminder that there's a serious formula shortage in the United States. In some states, nearly 100% of infant formula, both powdered and ready-to-feed, has been out of stock since spring. People are getting desperate, and are either cobbling together some mixture of stuff for their babies, either with or without guidance from a pediatrician, or feeding whatever formula they can get their hands on. It's sad and scary.

This is almost definitely the case. The United States government heavily subsidizes most agricultural commodities, especially "King Corn", wheat, and soy. In this country, it is political suicide to suggest that farm subsidies are bad, regardless of which party a politician might align with.

...and yes, the USDA subsidizes the crops, then turn around and tell the public to eat less of them. It's difficult to even find nonpartisan information about the issue.
