What is the definition of metal?

I was just thinking that while it's obvious if a substance is metal or not, I can't pin down why. Is it because its hard and shiny? Well so are diamonds but I wouldn't call them metal. The only definition that seems to work is "I know it when I see it".

Go view the periodic table in Chinese, every element with "金" attached is metal.

If you're talking about faggy ass elements then there's lots of criteria. Malleability, ductility, heat/electrical conductivity.

I'm struggling with this myself. Part of the problem is there's so many metals. Heavy metal, power metal, speed metal, progressive metal... and of course it's music so every recommendation is just "dude it's the greatest trust me".
This is the real question imo
