What is the definition of metal?

I was just thinking that while it's obvious if a substance is metal or not, I can't pin down why. Is it because its hard and shiny? Well so are diamonds but I wouldn't call them metal. The only definition that seems to work is "I know it when I see it".

If you're talking about faggy ass elements then there's lots of criteria. Malleability, ductility, heat/electrical conductivity.

Yeah, it needs to be crystalline and conductive (not needed at all temperatures and pressures, just the ones it will be used under), otherwise it's ceramic.
