I'm unsure why this is such a stigma for Americans (Europeans seems less hostile to the idea). Isn't it a good thing that you can keep a close eye on your parents?
America is a lot more individualistic than the rest of the world. Not only is there a stigma on living with your parents; old people also don't like being babied, and want to maintain their independence for as long as possible.

I'm fully preparing to do the asian thing of having my parents move in with me as they get older. Part of it is not trusting any at-home care that won't just be a deadbeat swiping on the phone in an emergency or taking photos of things for their baby daddy to come steal. It's just a matter of selling their home to pay for renovating my own to accommodate or keeping it as a rental.
This was the main reason why I bought my place, so my mom is safe and can worry less about money. I'll either sell it or rent it out after she's gone, then finally get the fuck out of Illinois.

I don't know how it is in Europe but in America I've seen it become a butting of heads in terms of the patriarch. Son leaves, starts family, wants to do the right thing bringing elder parents back in, but old man wants to remain top dog.

In Japan it's much more ingrained that first son is set to be the next patriarch and all the responsibility (but also the assets), and in both asia and europe there's a much more carried down sense of property.

Moving out and owning your own home ("the American dream") has been Banker propaganda to sell mortgages since at least the end of WWII. It has since evolved into simply "moving out on your own" so that (now corporate) land lords can get in on the action with ridiculous rent prices.

The American public has literally been brainwashed into thinking that if you don't abandon your family and throw all your money away, you're the worst kind of loser there is.

Thank you White man.

I see this, think of my aging parents, and want to cry.

I don't. However good they were as parents, mine are the quintessential rich boomers, who supported this lunacy to the hilt and to this day are sending me pro-Biden bs and endless antiracism sob stories despite living as far from black people as they physically can. I don't want them to get away with looting the nation to fund their comfortable retirements and consigning their own grandchildren to the status of hated minorities blamed for all the ills of the world.
