Short answer: They're fucked up.
Longer answer: We've become too accepting of people's fetishes until literally some of them have become almost mainstream. A lot of the blame has to go with popular media. Shows like Californication and Sex in the City to books like 50 Shades of Grey have made things like BDSM, swinging and other such things that used to be confined to the bedroom almost seem vanilla today. The abundance of porn out there and how so many people are open about their consumption of it that it has practically gone mainstream. Also there's the bogeyman in the form of the internet. You can find this shit out there if you really look for it. Name me one fetish that isn't illegal and you should be able to find images or movies about it using a simple Google search. Get enough interest and you have commercial DVDs you can buy for it.

Before all this, these idiots thought they were the only ones. Now, there are communities and they feed off each other. It makes a person feel less alone and more likely to be open about their disgusting fetishes.
