There’s a number of reasons, I’ll try to give a TLDR here and if I miss anything anyone can feel free to add to this list:Why would people think Novak is a douchebag? He got clean and now he's trying to help other people get clean. That's a noble cause to dedicate your life to.
-Staunch Bam supporters say he’s a bad friend because he leeched off Bam and his fame and money for years. The truth is, Bam brought Brandon into the fold when all his old CKY crew started abandoning ship one by one. Dunn actually hated Novak when he was brought in because he saw him for exactly what he was and he tried to warn Bam to no avail. Bam openly admitted in the past that when on tour or traveling in general Novak was his glorified house negro who carried his luggage for him, held his wallet, and drove his car for him. Bam knew he was a junkie at the time so knowingly setting up Novak like that was a recipe for disaster that can only be blamed on Bam himself.
-RE: disasters waiting to happen, Novak eventually wrecked one of Bam’s luxury sports cars on a late night mission to score junk. Every time Bam gets emo about Novak on IG the first thing he brings up is that Novak owes him a car, which I personally think is ridiculous. Sorry Bam, but that loss has to be charged to the game.
-One of his biggest claims when interviewed or speaking publicly is that he was a professional skateboarder at age 14 or so and was also the first skateboarder to be sponsored by Gatorade, which is a gross exaggeration.
Sponsored skater =/= professional skateboarder.
Sponsored skaters hierarchy is as follows:
1. Flow sponsorship is when you’re nothing and someone in the industry notices your talent and is willing to take a chance on fostering your talent This includes given free product, opportunity to film with a company’s official filmers and photographers, and offered free travel to hang out with the rest of the team so they can suss out skaters with obvious red flags in their personalities. Oftentimes these skaters will be offered a chance to leave their hometown and crash on a skaters couch to skate full time to see how they do. These skaters are not usually included in official team rosters.
2. Amateur skateboarders are official team riders who only receive product and money incentive for ads, features in magazines, etc. receive a small amount of base pay a month from a board sponsor and are featured on official team rosters. The lack of direct cash funding you receive from a board sponsor should be offset by finding sponsors for other components of the skateboard (wheels, bearings, trucks, grip tape), clothing, and if you’re Novak apparently you can also get cash from Gatorade. Also, be frugal with your free product and sell it for extra cash or trade for good and services and if you’re good under pressure you can win cash in contests.
3. Pro skaters have their names on a board. In addition To a decent amount of cash per month you also make royalties on anything with your name on. This has gotten muddled in modern times because a lot of rich kid dbags will start their own companies to release their own pro model.
Novak never had a board with his name until recently and it was a joint release with Bam. Back in the day he was somewhere between 1 & 2.
-Novak makes his money by referring people to rehab now, which some say is morally questionable. That’s up for debate but what we can all surely agree on is it’s predatory to tell people you’re handing out your personal phone number because you care when in reality you’re also doing it because you can make money off them
