Plagued /r/TNOmod and the Reddit HOI4 modding community - When a subreddit for a video game mod turns to utter insanity

Was playing a bit of HoI4 today and I started wondering why a mod called Kaiserreich is mostly known for the 2nd American Civil War, to the point that no one seems to care about Europe, even though the original appeal to the mod for me and I would guess more than a few was alt-history of a German victory in WWI.

And the more I think about it, the less I like about the Civil War from an ideological view. I know we like to shit on the modders, but if you really start thinking about it, the vast majority would rather have a disastrous and bloody war than do simple compromises, which for a war game is understandable, but its kind of fucked up to think about. I've gotten to the point where I purposely set the AI in my KX playthroughs for peace in America.

Tl:dr, Kaiserreich proves that extremist weirdos on both sides are fucking lame and gay, and one of the KRDevs probably had a curse put on his family by Herbert Hoover that they can't get rid of judging how much they hate him.

Tbh you need to nerf america otherwise its gonna be the juggernaut it was in reality and just steamroll whoever it decides to support. Again if you want to go fully historical there probably isnt even enough war support in the US for an intervention, considering how it took pearl harbour for people to support war and then the support was mostly for the pacific theatre and less so for the european one. And an america that just sits around and does nothing is also unappealing for players.

what always bothered me about mods featuring a 2ACW/ 2RCW is that they look like fan fictions, that the devs made for their favorite american/russian 1930s-50s politician. Why should anyone outside of those 2 countries even care who all this people are? I certainly don't and rather prefer something like RFs France (never played it after the old devs got overthrown) who just takes some literally who and turns him into some fantasy tier shizo.

I feel the same way about my favorite mods (Latin and South America expansions) but I think it's fun to see what people think of their former leaders and figures, and they're usually less masturbatory.

I think the old idea for RF France was that, like Hitler, he was some random at the right place at the right time that rose to power in his country. I think older versions of the mod had a lore event that basically ended with pointing out how without context a failed artist and a failed priest taking over Germany and Russia would sound just as goofy.

People think the holocaust happened because the nazis really hated the jews and not because there was literally not because there was no downside to not doing it. The war was already at point where it would either end with a total victory for Germany or the allies. Any hope for a partial peace was out of the window which is the reason Germany did what it did.

Really put a lot of effort into this one. Not like the guy reformed the way elections were held into a way were minorities also had seats in parliament. Or you know how he stopped/slowed the germanisation in the polish territories. I fucking hate the guy and think he was an incompetent leader but jesus christ these people know no nuance when it comes to actually making paths

Editing this again because there was also this weird thing between Wilhelm and Herzl which would be 100 times a better althist option. Germany had ambitions of securing the middle east and Herzl eventually tried to convince wilhelm that he should let him build a jewish state modeled after the german empire in israel. It was dropped because Wilhelm wanted to secure an alliance with the ottomans and not upset however if you go althistory you might as well go down this rabbit hole and have a focus in there where he conquers palastine and eventually deports the german jews there

On a perhaps unrelated note (but still relevant to this thread) Dustinl796, a HOI4 Youtuber who came out as trans and now goes by Gnarly Carly has left a comment in a recent video with 4.5k views saying they quit their job to make YT videos full-time.
