Plain coffee and tea are A ok as long as you drink an equal amount of water.Lowering his caloric intake to a reasonable number would be an excellent start; as you say, you don't stay that size with a sneak snack every now and then, it's because every meal is several meals and/or you drink anything but water (a lot of sugar in everything). If he wanted exercise, the big thing to worry about are his joints, especially his knees; if he wants to move, either a daily walk or two, and/or one of those sit-down exercise bikes, so you can exercise while gaming (I've done it). But a good start would be a proper diet, doing a morning/evening walk, and drinking water (no soda, gatorade, coffee, none of that, water). He'd probably see results within 2 weeks if he could stick to it, and a month would be definite results; the hard part is fighting your body and its cravings, he needs a food wrangler or a shock collar.
