I have a very good friend who literally grew up on the Falls Road during the Troubles. He had uncles and cousins who went down during that time for being caught up in it (not - he assures me - for the real bad stuff).

He lived through the indiscriminate murder and hatred that came from turning into the wrong street, or walking past the wrong bar.

At 21 he went to the states to travel. He said he got totally sick of the "Irish Americans" he met who where 5 generations out but said they loved the "old country". They had no understanding at all of the issues outside of folklore and propagandist Noraid shit-stirring and would often tell him how wrong he was to hold his homegrown opinions.
He was actually very balanced about the issues despite being raised on one side of the fence.

He lasted a year and came back. Nothing against America or Americans, just their absurd Hollywood interpretation of anything political outside of the states.

He said he had to return after finding himself being hostile to people in bars "You're not an Irish American, you're an American"

He settled back in Belfast, married well, has a son and lives a normal life.

Don't shoot me.

Ancestry is not association. I think many yanks just want a history they can latch onto.

I don't know man...I suspect that if I would get drunk and belligerent with locals in a pub anywhere on the planet, people would get sick of my shit.

Tiny bit of powelevel, but I had an African colleague one time who lived in America for a few years.

HE ABSOLUTELY DESPISED NIGGERS.

Not actual Africans, but the American variety. (Who for the most part are 1/4 white anyways.)

He was a smart guy, and two things would make him go on long winded rants: The history of his country and how tribalism/corrupt politicians had ruined it.

And American niggers.

He’d go on for five minutes at a time about how they’re lazy, constantly look for handouts and shortcuts, have a fucked destructive culture and zero self respect.

He lived with a bunch of Nigerians and Ghanaians while in college, and apparently this was an attitude he shared with his fellow Africans. They’d steer way clear of American blacks, who on their part apparently thought they were stuck up and “acting white”.

I sometimes think of him whenever I hear an American Black talk about raycissm and how hard they have it, and the importance of Africa and Afrocentrism.

I distinctly remember back in 2012-2013 that many people were reluctant to even ban stuff that made sense to ban, like creepshot subreddits. There truly was a commitment to free speech that ran throughout the community(and the internet at large really), and you could still profess a love for the concept without someone mocking you because "FrEeZe pEaCh" I think people underestimate just how badly the far left has managed to poison the well on that subject.

Nah that was always fucking bullshit. banning r/creepshots and r/deadgirls was just an excuse to start banning anything the extremist left didn't like.

If they really cared about banning dangerous content they'd ban the dozens of subs grooming kids and sending them black market HRT behind their parents backs.

I mean, I agree with you in concept. 'Offensive content' is and always will be an excuse to get their foot in the door. But there is a world of difference between "they're posting pictures of dead people" and "they disagree with us politically, so we're going to accuse them of brigading and ban them". But of course, they inevitably start with the most salacious stuff so they can get normies to say "don't you care about combating [child exploitation/terrorism/online extremism] at all? Of course we need to sign away out rights!"

Creepshots was banned because taking those upskirt photos is a sex crime in most of the country. The real problem was they banned that but left up all the drug abuse subreddits which are actively describing felony crimes. The legal liability is the same but one kind is promoted by the site owners, which shows that it was hypocritical.
