Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

Weird, I have nothing of that. What kind of globohomo shit are you talking about, videos I assume?
On YT? They have a recommended banner which is nothing to do with your interests on the homepage. Used to be full of government COVID videos and last month it was all gay/tranny stuff.

There is a 'not interested' button which does literally nothing because these videos always come back.

There's no "recommended" banner on my youtube frontpage.
This is how mine looks and don't judge my plebian interests.

Scrolling down I don't see anything either. Could be a regional thing.

I scrolled down mine and don't see it either right now. I guess there is no woke propaganda to push with pride month being over.

It looked something like this with coof stuff and last few weeks this was replaced with "Pride Month" stuff. No matter how many times you clicked the three dots and selected "Not Interested" they would always come back, like some malignant tumour. I swear Null mentioned it a few times too so I can't be the only one who is seeing this.

I've had it as well, multiple times. How long it stays hidden seems to vary, from anything between a month and a few days, depending on how determined they are to push something. The rona lockdown "information" videos came back every single day, which was bad enough on its own, but they were all about American things on top of that. Double useless to me. Most recently, they've been pushing tranny shit.

A video on a parrotfish sleeping in a bubble was "marked YouTube Kids" - which of course means comments disabled.

(Parrotfish in its protective mucus shield - YouTube)

Last time I saw that banner of "Current Thing of Current Year" videos, it was all on that Supreme Court abortion happening.

(one can close the entire banner with an "X" in the upper right)

Google swapping the "tabs" around on search results annoys me to no end. New browser window, type something in the address bar, it goes to google, click the second option for image results... Get google maps instead. Or shopping. Sometimes. Google maps won't find any result related to what I'm searching for so wtf?

Or I search for a location, click on where the map tab usually is located, and maybe Shopping and Maps switched places for unknown reasons?

I had a horrible realization a while ago: Many UI designers nowadays have never used anything other than a touchscreen. They don't even realize that you can use sites "blindly" because this isn't possible on a phone or tablet anyway due to lack of physical feedback. You always have to look at the device to double-check what you're doing, so the way to make an interface on there more efficient is to arrange things "smartly" like with autocompletion, which also conveniently fucks over everyone using an actual computer.

I hate how almost every wiki these days is on some centralized wiki service and has that same awful look and feel.
Yeah, FANDOM is hellbent on turning an information aggregator into a social media hub because that's totally why people go to Wikias. If you're looking for a way to undo some of the damage, head to GreasyFork and punch "Cleaner Wikis Userscript" into the searchbar. Removes a lot of the trash that only seems to take up space and annoy the shit out of you. Thankfully, the writing is on the wall for FANDOM since Jagex has started hosting their own Wikia for (OS)RS. If Digital Extremes could do the same for Warframe, that would be a massive blow to the sites traffic since (back when they made the info public) Warframe's Wikia was constantly #1.

Wikia was privately started by Jimmy Wales as a for-profit counterpart to Wikipedia. In 2018, it was bought out by some obscure LLC and rebranded to Fandom.

In tech, the way the slaughter works is like this:

1. Start service (Wikia).
2. Offer it for free.
3. Snuff out alternatives (any smaller self-hosted wiki for games).
4. Evaluate it (websites are priced based on their active users).
5. Go public.
6. Sell out.

So for #4, the reason "Integrated Media" bought Wikia is to pump it full of retard shit and then have Jews in California go "oy vey this has a 200m user reach, we can inject all sort of pozzed advertising and rules into this, we'll give you a BILLION DOLLAS for it". And then they sell it and retire.

That's the Great California Heist and it's being perpetrated on every single thing you've ever liked.

I think I bitched about these wikia sites a while ago in this thread. I miss when game sites were a labour of love from some autismo or small dedicated communities. Like the below which is a super detailed site dedicated to Icewind Dale and think was made by one guy like 20 years ago. These sites still exist but are almost impossible to find now with modern search engines because they are buried under a mountain of wikia shit.

btw the guy has pages dedicated to other games and was still trucking as recently as 2021: http://mikesrpgcenter.com/index.html

Search engines are complete fucking garbage and becoming completely irrelevant as the internet seemingly does the old media method of consolidation. Of course, the fact that search engines index sites like r*ddit and Facebook (both of which is fucking pointless since the former has their own internal search and the latter is practically pointless without an account) makes it practically impossible to find things. Couple that with how recency is pushed to the top of the search results makes finding information more than 5 years old a struggle and anything 10 years old practically impossible.
i've said this and i'll say it again, fandom/wikia has just too many ads that makes your browsing experience absolute hell if you're phonefagging
If you're on Android, you should consider using Kiwibrowser as it allows you to install extensions like adblockers and scriptmanagers. If you're on iPhone, you should consider leaving.

Yeah, the modern day internet seems to revolve around creating something to attract investors, pawn it off to whatever sap is dumb enough to buy it, then beat feet while leaving the investor holding the bag. Then whatever idiot was dumb enough to get suckered into it has to figure out the best way to generate profits which eventually degenerates into "showing as many ads as possible".

I don't remember if it was wikia/fandom/fextralife but their search function was absolute shit because it seemed to search ALL their hosted wikis and not just the one you were at. Just checked and that doesn't seem to be the case anymore but I'm still using google and add wiki to whatever vidya boss bullshit I'm looking for.

Luke Smith's Linux and technology videos are interesting. He should stick to those topics.
He's worth a follow. He also does a lot of stuff outside of Youtube videos. In fact, that video is likely the reason he ended up making based.cooking

I've been following his videos sine 2017. While I don't agree with many of his views (some of which are flat out stupid), his open-source projects and technology-based videos are worth following.

based.cooking is a great response to the idiotic and bloated recipe sites out there. mutt-wizard is a fantastic program to (finally) get mutt email working.
