You are right. Where i live some farmers have several hectars of land which is worth ober 1 million at least. But it is a difference of having money in your bank and having money in something you simply own and can't possibly exchange quickly.

This was true in Scandinavia where it descended from the old Norse tradition of independent farmsteads and to a degree in other parts of Europe. England had the original yeoman farmers and a poorer class called husbandmen in a similar role. Pretty sure they were in parts of Spain too, they were common in Eastern Europe (and related to Cossack revolts and the people who settled modern Ukraine and Siberia), the Balkans being a tribal hellhole of course had free peasants, basically these sorts of free peasants were everywhere.
