The scene has Colin Firth go check out a church that is an incredible exaggeration of Westboro Baptist. The Preacher calls for the death of niggers, kikes, and faggots. Bob missed the point of that scene and the whole movie, I guess. He probably thought the villain was a Thinker, right about everything and probably wished he had won. Basically, any joy an audience would take in all those evil church Believers being murdered by the villain's mind control rage inducer was supposed to have been undercut by the heroic character who was there being shot in the head and killed.* The villains plan would probably meet with approval from Bob since all the bad Believers were wiped out in the church and then the villain planned to wipe out all the Obsoletes in the world. Perfect Bob hero, except he was the villain.

I mean imagine someone told you that you were descended from a nationality of people that don't understand how vowels work and are known for fraternizing with sheep. IIRC his father was syphilitic and his mother was in and out of sanitariums, he was probably genetically predisposed to being a little cracked. Most people of the time probably weren't that concerned with their geneaology but guilt/degeneracy passed in the bloodline is a common enough theme in his works.

I don't think there are many that would argue against Lovecraft's horrors reflect his own fears.

I've tended to attribute "recovering Catholic Syndrome" to the fact that Catholicism has a few more goofy things in it than Protestant Christianity, some of which aren't even in the Bible but which are the result of Papal Edicts and such, which makes it easier for a teen or tween like Bob to reject it all wholesale and go full fedora-tipper. Basically it's more opportunities for a kid to say, "Yeah, this makes no sense, I see no evidence for it, imma stop going to church and shit, God doesn't reals."

Maybe you're right, the early 1900's were still very racist and stayed that way long after he died. It just seems that Lovecraft was way more overt in his writing than other authors from that time (that i've read anyway).

Not sure where the fact that he's still popular comes into it, we still read and discuss authors from hundreds of years before Lovecraft. And it always seemed that his racism stuck out even compared to those.

I might just not have read enough American literature so Lovecraft's views could be par for the course. But anyway, I don't care that some guy 100 years ago wrote mean words about black people. I still read his stuff and think it's mostly pretty good.

I can think of another person we think of from that period who was very overtly racist and still has influence today, former President Woodrow Wilson.

In February 1915, upon viewing The Birth of a Nation at a special White House screening, President Woodrow Wilson reportedly remarked, “It's like writing history with lightning. My only regret is that it is all so terribly true.”

Historically, Lovecraft is important in the weird fiction movement in American literature that was centered around Weird Tales magazine. He actually had a lot of friends and managed to become something of a leader in his field. He even dated other writers and eventually married one. Considering his wife was Jewish, I wonder how much his published antisemitism was simply edge-lording. Lovecraft actually made more money as a ghost writer for others than he did for his own writing. His most famous client as a ghost writer was probably Harry Houdini. Right now, Lovecraft's writing is very popular in Japan, with the Call of Cthulhu Tabletop RPG being more popular in Japan than it is in every other country in the world combined and also far more popular there than Dungeons and Dragons is. I sometimes wonder if it's Lovecraft's popularity in Japan and to a lesser extent Europe that drives his continued popularity today, given I think the US literary establishment hates him.

Of course, this doesn't really have that much to do with MovieBob except that Bob is quite a horrible bigot himself, but Bob has no accomplishments really and as far as I can tell no friends. Bob was never in a romantic relationship with anyone, either. I wonder if people will be talking about Bob for many years after his death?
