Nominating Bernie would blow up their system worse than anything. Their entire machine is based on submission to the party establishment. He was an outsider who was only allowed into the race in 2016 because they thought he stood no chance. If they nominated him instead of an establishment pawn, it would send the message that the lifetime of service the other pawns have given to the establishment doesn't matter, that a rogue can jump ahead of them in line. That would collapse the party because it would cause the value of all the favors they've spent their careers giving and taking to instantly drop to zero.

Also it would embolden the hardcore progs. They can only be convinced to vote blue no matter who because they're convinced their real goal leaders are not going to get through. If one of them won the primary, they stop playing nice for good.

I think this whole debate is a bit optimistic. Look at what's happening to government institutions, particularly the military. A whole bunch of senior careerists have become out and out woke ideologues and hyper partisan shills for the Dems. There's no walking this back, a Trump victory will mean the end of them. I doubt they're going to sit back and play nice when it becomes apparent that Trump can't be stopped in 2024.
