I think it's partly this and partly the faith that they can win every conflict they're dealt with. It's the particular kind of arrogance that comes from believing you're on the right side of history and that any difficulties you encounter are just speedbumps instead of roadblocks.

It really screams free country when you open fire on a citizen for trying to drive away from a protest, then defend said policeman on a national news channel for children by stating that said citizen was acting irrationally dangerous by slowly backing away in a vehicle that tops out at 50km/h. Democracy fails because it rewards short-term thinking. It's all about getting elected, not what the consequences are. Since green enviroshit is popular now, cutting emissions is good and damn the consequences with HOW emissions are cut. Hence banning fertilizer, pesticide, coal, and nuclear power without having any replacement because making a reliable renewable energy grid has a pricetag far higher than the much quoted "solar and wind are the cheapest form of energy" shit that gets passed around. And there IS no alternative to these fertilizers because if you want high crop yield necessary to feed the world without fertilizer then you'd need GMOs and we all know what they think of those.

And you know what? It wouldn't even matter anyway. So what if only 2% of Dutch are farmers, they don't deserve to lose their livelihoods over it.
