Depends, from what little I know, on whether you get put in protective custody or general population. Was watching a recent interview with Martin Shekreli about his time in jail, and even with him intentionally romantizising his time there, it's very clear he was thrown in the same pit as hardened drug dealers, hitmen, and gang members, but to be fair this was probably also because the judge threw the book at him instead of putting him with less dangerous criminals with similar rap sheets to him.

Good news for Baked Alaska a-logs. There is no protective custody in federal prison. If you are locked up by the feds and you can't hang in general population the only option is to throw you in the SHU aka special housing unit, aka the hole, aka the prison inside a prison. I think the normal schedule there includes 23 hours a day lockdown then they let you hang out in a human sized dog kennel outside for an hour so you don't go completely insane. He really has no option but to stay in GP.
