And people downplay Victarion so easily because he's a bit of a brute, forgetting he's a capable captain. If he says he's getting to Dany, he will.
This is true for sure. But people were willing to overlook his horrendous prose and glacial pace for basically an entire decade when Game of Thrones was on because they were getting new ASOIAF content in the main story. Seeing the world. The characters. The Wall. King's Landing. Dragons. People are willing to look beyond obvious flaws in anything by being distracted by something else or getting something better to replace them. It was easier for fans to ignore the glaring flaws in the first three or four books because it looked like GRRM was going to finish the series, there was a high budget show for ASOIAF that was airing, and it appeared that the books and show would end simultaneously. So we could get the book ending and then see it happen live on screen. Yeah sure AFFC was not even a good book but it was part of a grander narrative that would be done in a few years and we could judge everything together.

Pretty much, I grew up with basically the entire literary establishment fellating the dude as the American version of J.R.R. Tolkien for the epic scale of his stories and the first time I heard of Gurm being referred to in the same vein was after Game of Thrones exploded in popularity. The show single-handedly built Martin's fame, ASOIAF first began getting published in the 90s but nobody really gave a fuck because even back then edgy grimdark fantasy was nothing special.
He's not capable of writing anything close to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and while also taking years to finish, Tolkien was working to support a family by teaching/translating and created an entire language for his opus at the same time. He was meticulous about sticking to his story as evidenced by the tons of notes he left behind. Martin is a childless television screenplay writer who's simply out of his depth. Anyone who thinks he's in the same league as Tolkien is a midwit.
