That doesn't mean they won't do it anyway because there really is no harm that can be committed by doing it for the benefit of the family besides the financial cost.
I don’t think the cost of narcotics is impacting the hospital decision whether or not to use them to support the removal of life support equipment. It’s a grain of sand on the beach compared to the money and effort expended keeping poor child’s corpse animated for months.

Keep in mind the kid has been on parenteral feeding for three months. He's likely pooing about a 6 on the stool consistency scale, so to put it indelicately yes there is a good/better than normal chance he will shit himself at the end.
Oh yes, in Archies case it's pretty much a given that there will be evacuation, but he's in a nappy as he has no bowel control anyway. I was more wanting to point out that it's not an automatic thing that happens when everyone dies.

Well Hollie's spending the last day with her son posting pictures:

As an Amerifag I can’t think of an equivalent to the word Chav

‘White trash’ is probably the closest phrase? You don’t have an exact equivalent because social class is a lot more fluid than it is here (and in the UK class is less correlated with race - posh people can be black/brown as long as they are extremely rich and went to one of a handful of toff schools).

Eminem is an Americhav.
NASCAR & MMA fans are probably the most similar to chavs (but are more likely to be in full time work and own their own modest properties than chavs are due to the US having less of a benefits/welfare system).
Juggaloes. Except with even worse taste in makeup and music.
I don’t know how Archie transferred from his local hospital to London.
A medfag friend of mine rather cynically suggested the NHS chose Royal London because even they couldn't kill him any deader than he already is. If they took him to Great Ormond Street he'd be blocking an ICU bed in an actually good hospital.

:semperfidelis:

TBF Royal London is likely to have way more on site security and a closer (more frequently used!) relationship with local plod, partly because it’s in the East End rather than Bloomsbury but mostly because it’s a general hospital and not purely a children’s specialist centre.
Royal London will be used to dealing with overdosing druggies, stabbing victims and beaten prostitutes - it’s likely much better placed to cope with Hollie behaving like an arsehole and a pitchforky mob on the doorstep than GOSH is.

Still shit for staff, other patients and their families, of course.

I remember a few years ago there was a little boy here who suddenly became very ill. His parents got him to the local hospital, but unfortunately there wasn’t a PICU bed available locally so they had to transfer him to another city by ambulance. There were only standard ambulances, and due to his deteriorating condition, doctors had to travel in it with him meaning his parents couldn’t. Sadly the boy died once he got to the bigger hospital. Do you know what his parents did? They started a charity to buy a specialised ambulance that would allow family members to be transported with critically ill patients. They didn’t kick up fuck and blame the staff, they didn’t accuse the doctors of killing him, they channeled their devastation into something worthwhile. They did that because although they managed to get to him before he died, they still lost a couple of hours with him in the lead up to his death and they didn’t want any other parents to experience that.

This woman is spending the hours leading up to her sons death posting memes and adding more stress to the staff caring for him. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be given a letter outlining how your sons life will end, but I know without doubt my reaction wouldn’t be to post sassy memes for my audience of ignorant chavs. Imagine what they could do if they were like the people I spoke about. They could do something massive for kids with poor mental health in his memory.

Also the family's offical statement according to their lawyers:

1659279594145.png

Full statement from the family of Archie Battersbee:

"This Saturday, the Chief Medical Officer of Barts Health NHS Trust, Alistair Chesser, was quoted in a number of media articles as saying: "We are giving Archie's loved ones time to come to terms with the decision of the courts that treatment should not continue and are involving them at each stage. Any further delay in starting palliative care would not be appropriate without an order of the court."

These assertions are misleading.

Firstly, “giving Archie's loved ones time to come to terms with the decision” is precisely what the Trust has refused to do. The Trust has been dragging us as a family through the courts at a breakneck speed from 27 April till the final decision of the Supreme Court this Thursday evening. The urgent application to the UN had to be prepared overnight by our legal team and submitted Friday morning. On the same day, despite the interim measures granted by the UN, the Trust unilaterally informed us that the withdrawal will take place at 2 pm on Monday and that was not negotiable.

Secondly, “involving” us at each stage has consisted of daily point-blank, non-negotiable orders. The Trust has never made any attempt to agree any sort of compromise with us on any matters great or small. For example this Friday, our lawyers received a letter from the Trust demanding that all videos of Archie and his medical equipment taken on the ward, which we believe is evidence of improvement in Archie’s condition (such as his attempts to breathe independently) are immediately deleted; and threatened legal proceedings for an alleged breach of data protection.

Thirdly, the Trust has no intention of “starting palliative care”. As the order of Mr Justice Hayden records, the Trust informed the Court that “the implementation of paragraph 3 of this recital and paragraph 2 of the declarations set out below will result in the child, Archie Battersbee’s death, within a short period of time thereafter”. There may be different descriptions for doing an act which is known and intended to result in the child’s immediate death. “Starting palliative care” is simply not one of them. Indeed, we believe this is an insult to all those who do the noble work of palliative care.

We as a family are very disappointed that the Trust’s management has chosen to hide behind euphemisms and to mislead the public. It is hard to see any reason for that behaviour except knowing that what they are doing is cruel and wrong."

I am MOTI again. I just cannot imagine being at this point in proceedings and wanting to do anything but go dark and just try and carry on existing through the next 24 hours.
Palliative care means making someone as comfortable as possible while they die you stupid wench what more can you expect them to do?
