This would make sense had it not been revealed autism is over 90% genetic, far above troonery (33% at max in concordant twins) and homosexuality (12-35% at max). So while you might not find all of the genes responsible, it's always amusing to see moms who never got vaccinated for actually deadly childhood diseases find out their kid got autism despite no one getting the poke.

The DPT (diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus) vaccine was reformulated because there was some (erroneous) evidence that the P component could trigger brain damage in a very small percentage of the children who got the vax, and it seemed to run in families.

In the end, it was discovered that these people actually had a rare genetic error of sodium metabolism in the brain, and would have become disabled, vaccine or not. The first symptoms are usually seizures, triggered by fevers which the vaccine can indeed cause, and even without the vaccine, the child will start to develop symptoms at the approximate age where DPT is given to babies.

As an aside, I had a friend on another website (the site was shut down) whose son as a toddler was diagnosed with severe autism, coupled with terrible bowel problems, and at that time, the GF diet for autism was all the rage, and they agreed with their doctors that it would be harmless to try it. And guess what? Their son's condition improved so much, the doctors all agreed that most likely, their son has a metabolic disorder that produces autism-like symptoms. (The same diagnosis was given to a family at my old church, although his specific disorder was identified; if you remember the story I've told about the child who was kicked out of Sunday School because he was constantly pinching other children, that's him.)

So there are actually a lot of genetic changes that have a high probability of being linked to autism. There isn't one autism gene (so far, there are 100 top contenders) and not everyone with a mutation will end up having symptoms of autism.
This isn't extremely relevant, but I think it's cool and there's a lot of autists on here: SPARK is a study looking into the genetics of autism among other things.

It's true, though, and really male means XY and female means XX, important these days when we pretend that you can become a "woman" by just saying so. ASD occurs more often in males than females, though, because a number of genes relating to it are on the X chromosome and males, having only one, don't have another "good" copy to fill in if the only one they have is defective.

(And also for the social bias reason that males are more likely to be diagnosed with it for the same behavior that is disregarded in females.)

It's not behavior thats disregarded in girls so much as it is that girls tend to mask better. An autistic girl who sucks at masking and whose special interests are shit outside of what's considered stereotypically normal for girls their age is much more likely to get diagnosed (pretty sure that's the only reason i was diagnosed as a kid).

Personally I kinda doubt autism is more common in males, just much more commonly diagnosed.
