I absolutely agree with you. It's unfortunate that thinking has shifted to the fantasy that persons like her are just 'special' in some way and she's been left to remain a child mentally. She may have been able to keep up in a mainstream school setting (no doubt with a great deal of accomodation), but I think she really hit her limit in her early teens. Since you can slog through almost any class in school in a performative way and the current fashion for accomodation, she got further through school than she really should have. I don't think she actually understands any of the information presented in a meaningful way, but that wasn't the metric that schoolwork uses. Classroom work is pretty performative; it's better if you can just memorize things even if you don't actually understand them. Actually, that's a great way to get good grades. This is why some profoundly stupid people can get through a 'normal' curriculum, and someone with good critical thinking skills and curiousity will get bogged down. If I can sperge about this a little more; she probably peaked intellectually and emotionally in 8th or 9th grade. You can read Tolstoy in 8th grade and get through it with a basic understanding. You know all the words, even some of the big ones. But if you go back and read the same thing at 25, your context has expanded considerably and your understanding is at a completely different level. Mentally and emotionally, she is still in 8th grade, but she doesn't realize it.

I think she has a sex drive, but is mentally incapable of attaching it to anything. She gets horny but it's just a physical function for her. With a lot of effort she can point it in a certain direction but it never makes it anywhere. That's why she can get excited over the idea of sex, but when faced with actually going through it she fizzles. It's also why she confuses ordinary interests with gender identities and sexuality; she simply doesn't understand the difference between saying, "That's interesting," and "I want to fuck you," because she's never had genuine sexual attraction to anyone and anything.

This hits way closer to home than usual because I live with someone who's on a boatload of meds for major... everything. They went into inpatient about a week ago, where we had to take them after months of suicidal ideation every day and a total breakdown of their mental health. That shit is really serious, it's not the 'ooh teehee I scratched myself with a scissor so I win this stupid Twitter slapfight, anyways now time to go prance in the woods', it's watching a normally functional adult have to quit their job because they can't handle leaving the house and you have to hide the car keys and sleep on the floor in front of the front door so they don't leave at 3am to throw themselves off a bridge because that's their plan and they're struggling more and more with not doing it every day. It's thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars in medical bills while watching the medication cabinet go from two pill bottles to five to six and the dosages doubling and tripling in a matter of weeks, and when you try and covertly run the med list by your medical family member their reaction is 'jesus christ'. It's watching the windows of the house getting covered up with bedsheets so they aren't in a ball of near-catatonic paranoia on the bedroom floor because they think the sky is trying to kill them, or watching the sound of a motorcycle three blocks over send them into hysterical crying, or an hour of sobbing and checking every door and window at 3am every night because they're convinced a murderer is going to break into the house. It's having to, by the point you both finally accept you're taking a trip to the crisis unit half a state away at 2am on a Tuesday night, not let them be in a room by themselves because they might find anything to hurt themselves with. It's reaching the point where the options being considered involve shit like prescription ketamine, or electroconvulsive therapy, or god knows what else because nothing is working and you're desperate and running out of shit to try. Sorry it's been nuts these past few months.

Mental health is not a contest. My friend is really bad but everyone deserves help and support for the shit they go through, no matter whether it's cataclysmic or just draining and shitty. But seeing Stapphy so glibly bounce from 'oh yeah I was hospitalized... but apparently this affected my life in no way whatsoever a few days later, my most serious medication is my prescribed antiacids' when we all know she'd be flaunting the most basic 5mg escitalopram like a battle standard is so fucking irritating.

We don’t do that in America. People can’t be forced into psychiatric care, and therapy only works if the patient is amenable. It’s difficult to force someone to take antipsychotic drugs too. Check out videos of actually crazy homeless people in the big cities. Even if we could institutionalize and medicate people against their will, people like Yarrow would be nowhere near the top of the list. Autism isn’t dangerous insanity.

There's sad examples of people here on the Farms of people who probably SHOULD have been medicated/institutionalized and weren't, and they're often threads where the person in question didn't survive. Terry Davis is a good example, or... shit that one guy who thought his house was being invaded by paratroopers and God was sending lions to fight them, who died of progressive sepsis that he live posted about on his blog but constantly refused care and welfare checks. The only examples of genuine crazy that get locked up are dudes like John Bulla, and he was only locked up for threatening a neighbor with a necklace made of knives.
