Suikoden 1 and 2 Remaster - 216 Mother Fuckin' Stars

I was repeatedly told Suikoden II was great, the greatest jrpg of all time. That it's very powerful. Also told the same thing about III. Apparently pronounced Suh wee ho hen or something. Hard copies used to sell for $150+ and I cannot emphasize enough how absurd this was in the mid to late 2000s, I know that kind of scalping price is a "bargain" now.

I wonder if it's held up well. Worthy of a remaster? Very neat news. Some ps1 games feel classic, maybe timeless if you want to reach. And others do not. I never got to find out if this one does. Lost interest in jrpgs by the time I figured emulation out. I can blame that partially on Suweehohen IV actually. Mistake of a game. Was also told II is completely different to IV and can not be compared, which I trust.

Loved Suikoden 1 and I've always had it in the back of my mind to play Suikoden 2, so happy to see this, buuuuuuut not truting Konami to not release a shit port, so will have to see what the end result actually is to be proper happy.

1) Yes, it is.

2) Yes, it has.

Also Suikoden 3 and 5 are genuinely great so I hope we get remasters of those as well.

I was extremely lucky and got both 1 and 2 together for $100 on Ebay in the early 2000s.

I remember I planned on playing those games 10 years ago. Still haven't gotten around to playing them.

Who had thought that one day i would have Suikoden in my steam wishlist....please Konami dont fuck this up.

In a related note, Eiyuden Chronicles Rising (the prequel game to the upcoming game from the original Suikoden creator) will come out for consoles physically on January 26th next year.

Suikoden 2 is pretty good. I recently played FF Tactics and I consider Suikoden 2 way better than FF Tactics so far as the story/writing goes. Suikoden 2 has basically standard JRPG turn-based gameplay with some occasional token "strategy" segments that are very simple and perfunctory/half-assed, so those don't really matter.

As with most good JRPGs, the strength of Suikoden 2 lies in the writing/characters. I think it's probably been given excessively high praise. It's good, but not the astoundingly magnificent work of pure flawless art that some people will tell you that it is.

Definitely a must that you should check off your list before you die if you like JRPGs.

Considering how great and faithful the Live a Live remaster was I am definitely willing to check these out.

A summary of the general story and gameplay would be nice.

It's traditional turn based random battles.

Some characters can partner up to do special moves depending on who's in your party.

There are also turn based strategy battles and one on one duels at certain points in the game. Oh and a cooking mini game in Suikoden 2.

In each game you play a young teen (not as tropey as it sounds) who is forced into becoming the leader of an army and recruiting 108 people to your army to fight a bad guy who is a threat to your country. Most characters can join your party and fight, some can't though they have a special function in your army (like map maker or farmer).

The tone is pretty serious (though both games have jokey moments) and there is a lot of political stuff in the games. (Like Game of Thrones but without everyone screaming "cunt", and it doesn't fall apart at the end).

The games are loosely based on the famous Chinese story "The Water Margin". I'm trying to be as general as I can to not spoil anything.

The updated background art looks decent -- they actually put an iota of effort into it rather than just slapping on a blurry filter and calling it 'HD'. The new backgrounds clash with the sprites, though, but I don't mind that too much. I'd rather have pixelated original sprites than ugly upscaled ones or ones redrawn by a new (probably crappy) artist.

Wonder if they're going to update the scripts / translations at all. Both games have pretty spotty (and at times, downright broken) translations. Both could also use some bug fixing.

I'm hoping they fix some of the buggy bits but don't "modernise" it ala give it to an sjw to ruin.

Yeah, there's some stuff in the original games that just wasn't included originally, but there's remains of it in the code IIRC.

I think some bugs like the aforementioned Matilda Glitch were fixed in one of the ports, but I can't remember which.

As for dialogue in 1/2 there was one bit in 1 where they messed up and had the scene setting as one of the dialogue boxes, so all of the characters were saying the wrong thing, there's probably more to fix.

kind of curious if they'll fix the awful translation issues 2 has. but all the same these games are good, some of my favorites, gameplay isn't astounding, but I do think the story of 2 is extremely well written.

depending on how this turns out might take this as a chance to stream this for some friends who ain't seen it.

I would guess for the Japan only PSP release.

4 is not even bad, it's just not as good as the others, but still worth playing if you like the series.
