I was just having a discussion with somebody else about how a modern draft would make the hippies look like college graduates by comparison. If they thought draft dodging was bad I'd imagine armed resistance would be much worse. People are already pissed generally and giving them an ultimatum of criminal OR dead in a foreign country nobody cares about for a cause nobody cares about I think it'll remove that last nagging doubt of whether they should resist or not seeing as you're already telling them they'll be a criminal regardless.

Its actually pretty fucking difficult to mobilize nukes without people noticing. Mostly because they're A. under heavy guard for obvious reasons, B. aside from ICBM's not typically located where their launch platforms are and C. there's very few valid launch platforms, even or especially today following the nuclear disarmament with the end of the Cold War, even in Russia, or perhaps especially in Russia since they didn't and don't have the technical prowess to shrink things down nearly as much as the US could and did. Then again, if I saw a nuke being wheeled up to the front of the Senate I'm not sure I'd be all that inclined to do anything except hop in a car (wouldn't care who it belonged to at that point) and hope I can escape the blast radius. Leaving aside my obvious distaste for the Feds, when you're dealing with megatons of TNT the best safety equipment is a fast car, and barring that, a good set of running shoes.

Okay, but when you consider that like every other military our first line of reserves are veterans? I think drafting citizens by lot would be more less likely to end in violence.

While I wouldn't say it is going to happen real soon. Military Recruitment numbers have fallen off a cliff and are continuing to fall. While exact shortfall percentages are hard to find, I have seen some numbers which put it around an average of 25% shortfall in recruiting. While that can and will be made up with stop-loss and reserves being called up, that is only a short term solution.

Retention is also a major (self-inflicted) problem right now. A lot of guys are being drummed out. A lot more are just refusing to re-up.

So if the ship isn't righted in the next 10 years, there will have to be a major change in how the military is handled. Either massively downsize, or draft.

We'll see. But from what I've heard the damage Obama has done is literally generational. The single biggest enlistment pool the military had was family members of those who served. But with all the pissed-off veterans telling their relatives "Don't fucking bother", that pool has started to shrink pretty badly and will only continue to shrink as the number of veterans do. Biden's remark about kids patrolling the same streets their fathers did is also guaranteed to cripple enlistment for decades as fathers across America do their best to make sure their kids don't fight the same wars they did.

(Random aside, but I've always thought that was one of the reasons why the Allies decided to crush Germany once and for all in WW2. None of the men who had fought the Germans in the 1910's and had seen their children fight in the 1940's wanted to see their grandchildren go off to fight the Germans again after yet another 20 year armistice.)

And begs the question of whether preserving that strength is actually a good idea.

At this point, with the current leadership? It honestly isn't. I don't know whose interests they serve (take a pick since the list of possibilities is pretty damn big) but it sure as hell isn't the American people.
