I actually saw it about 20mins after it was posted and it already had a few comments with a bunch of people reading. I'd figure I'd wait a bit so I could show as much cope as possible.

Fast forward 10 months. I’m dealing with the infamous post-op urological complications. I know having to deal with complications for months or years after surgery (or the possibility of it) is a major deterrent to many people considering phallo; it is, after all, daunting to face the possibility of continual medical care. You can die of urosepsis, but a UTI is more often the beginning of a long, gruelling end. Sometimes you have an ambulatory person who gets a UTI, falls, and breaks a hip and/or is down for a day and gets rhabdo. Or it sets off a long failure to thrive, where they get treated for the UTI but never bounce back to their previous baseline.

When the average young person, usually a woman, gets a UTI, it hurts to pee and they might have bladder pain, spasms, cramping. When an older person gets a UTI, the signals have been muted. Instead of a demented person still being able to point to their crotch as "where it hurts," it's the normal state of pleasant confusion giving way to trying to fight your spouse of 50 years because they were in bed with you. Or sharp-as-a-tack Grandma suddenly behaving as though she's deeply demented, terrifying for her and for everyone around her.
