I love it.
Her own writing tips advised people to ignore bad criticism and let controversy just blow over, but she can't let it die. If she really were innocent and unbothered by the allegations she would ignore it and go on with her life, or -- if she really needed to address something -- just explain where the misunderstanding set in.
But you don't, like... post a list of all the accusations. You're literally inviting people who are curious about where they came from to poke around. Maybe the initial intent of a fan is to sneer at the haters, but it pretty much directs people on exactly what to look for and any fan that's even remotely open-minded (granted, not a given; the Lily Orchard Gossip Blog has a huge pinned comment with all the receipts but still gets dipshits claiming they're an jilted ex making up stories) is going to start going down rabbit holes and questioning the narrative they're being fed.
4:08-5:44 Lily says that the success of Harry Potter has largely come from children latching onto the characters going on episodic magical adventures together, and acknowledges that they are the best part of the series, explains why by going over her favorite scenes in the series.
This is a little old at the moment but I do want to address this somewhat broadly.
With Lily's other fandoms -- World of Warcraft, Star Wars, Owl House -- I really didn't have any point of context when she makes wild claims about what The Fandom is thinking because I'm not involved in any of them. I can gauge certain temperatures through cultural osmosis, but I'm not really trawling forums and fanfiction websites to see what the tenor of the conversation is overall. I'm sure she's oftentimes lying or being highly selective in what she talks about, but I didn't have any personal experience.
But I was around during the heyday of Harry Potter, and at last I can say provably that Lily is talking out her ass about the fandom.
Like yeah, people do like the escapist fantasy and making their own wizards and thinking about what it would be like to go to Hogwarts and dismantling the paper-thin logic of the Wizarding World in a real-world context and how catastrophically the whole thing folds in on itself with any amount of consideration. Sure. But back in the day people were HUGE into theorizing where the story was going. There were websites dedicated to analytical essays about the prophetic abilities of the Weasley family or the alchemical symbolism behind the deaths of Sirius BLACK and ALBUS Dumbledore hinting that RUBEUS Hagrid was going to die in the final book (the three processes of alchemy being the black, white, and red stages).
People got into fights about whether Harry was going to die as often as they got into fights about who he would end up with. People psychoanalyzed every character from every angle in the hype build between books. People didn't read Harry Potter for wizard school shenanigans, they were absolutely invested in the characters and the story and thinking that turning it into a cozy sitcom with zero stakes would be more successful is insane.
Lily absolutely just makes up what other people think in order to validate her own opinions, and that's almost sad. Why can't she just enjoy things without having to think it's the popular opinion and then convince other people that it's actually the popular opinion? Either way it's using a critic's platform to play at being an authority on the subject she's completely made up just to convince herself she's popular.
