On stuff that matters, the opposite was often claimed and they even did research on it.

It all depends on whom you define as political right.
For example, the Republican party is a party of capitalist shills and cuckservatards, and is almost completely socially liberal and promoting individual freedom - with minor exceptions, such as trying to kill anti-Israel/pro-BDS speech or having some books on gender removed from libraries. This party is far right on economics, center on social issues.
The Dems are almost as far right on economics, but are far left-ish on social issues.
These are both centrist entities.
Their speech is NOT under threat.
The legal speech that is under threat is speech that is illiberal, points out that groups of people are identifiable and can be quite different, while still human, that gender is inner feelings and sex is objective biological truth. Speech that claims peoples, including those from European tribes, are to be allowed an ethnic homeland.
The above speech is all under threat and is periodically removed from all big platforms.
Right-leaning and cuckservatism are not a threat and not under threat. It's the actual right that's under threat.
Also, if we still had an actual left, i.e. a left that's socialist and seeks redistribution of wealth and nationalizing industries, that would also be under severe threat.
