I don't quite buy it either. That being said, while Baris and I don't agree about how deliberate and malicious it is, the House and Senate GOP leaders have been shopping for someone other than Trump since they view him as a big risk. DeSantis is definitely their first pick.

The Federalist Society people I speak to all want anyone besides Trump to run. One has argued to me that 2024 is DeSantis' chance, and if he doesn't take it now he'll end up missing the zenith of his political career. But of course, they're almost entirely institutional conservatives closer to Paul Ryan than Rand Paul. It just speaks volumes to where the focus of the conservative intellectual backbone is right now.

If Trump runs, he just needs to sit down and take his shot later. I actually think he's quite intelligent,.
